Joey Merlin’s profession and career
Stanfa was arrested in March 1994 for crimes under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, convicted in 1995 and sentenced to life in prison in 1996. With most of Stanfa’s allies arrested and convicted, Merlino won the battle and elected Ralph Natale as new boss, while setting himself up as his underboss after he was released from prison in November 1994. Merlino was the real authority in the family during Natale’s reign, allowing Natale to become boss and divert the police’s focus away from himself.
Despite this, Merlino made a name for himself as a flamboyant celebrity gangster who often partied with a large entourage. Because of his open approach in front of TV cameras, the media called him “John Gotti of Passyunk Avenue” (Passyunk Avenue is a thoroughfare in South Philadelphia). He also invited reporters to Christmas parties for the needy and Thanksgiving turkey giveaways at housing estates. The attitude and aggression of Merlin’s youth faction scared several criminals away from cooperating with the crime family. Merlino would often place large bets with the bookies and then refuse to pay when he lost. Gobbling was a method used by both independent and mafia-run bookmakers. Merlino and Natale ran the crime family through gambling, loan sharking, extortion and racketeering of stolen goods during this period.
