After Joe filed divorce papers in early September, Sophie ended up filing a lawsuit against her ex-husband for the return of their two children, Willa, 3, and Delphine, 1, to the UK. Sophie alleged that Joe would not give them their passports and also alleged that they agreed to make England their permanent home before the divorce application was filed.
Joe then responded to the lawsuit, saying that he did not kidnap his children in any way.
They then agreed to keep the children in New York City while all custody details were worked out.
On Tuesday (Oct. 3), Joe and Sophie’s attorneys appeared before a judge in a Manhattan courtroom to try to set a trial date for custody proceedings to begin. Sophie’s team asked the judge to consider a trial as soon as possible, as she has a work commitment starting in January 2024. Joe’s team asked for a trial starting in the new year, after the major part of the Jonas Brothers tour dates.
In the end, Judge Katherine Polk Failla sided with Joe’s team and set a court hearing date for January 2, 2024. Joe hopes his divorce and custody trial can be heard in the US, while Sophie wants to take him to England.
In addition, new details have just been revealed about that October 3 hearing. The judge also ordered Joe and Sophie to hold a four-day mediation.
