Jho Low was born on November 4, 1981 in George Town, Penang Island, Malaysia as Low Taek Jho. He was born into a wealthy Malaysian Chinese Teochew family. Low’s grandfather, Low Meng Tak, was a businessman in Thailand in the 1960s and 1970s who had interests in iron ore mining and liquor distilleries, as well as real estate in Thailand, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Tan Sri Larry Low Hock Peng, Low’s father, founded the investment holding company MWE Holdings. Low grew up in Malaysia as the youngest of three children. As a result, he has two siblings: Szen Low and Low May Lin. Jho Low is 41 years old and of mixed nationality since 2023. He is of Malaysian origin. He also holds citizenship of St Kitts and Nevis and was granted a Cypriot passport as part of his Cypriot citizenship.
Low was educated at Chung Ling High School and The International School of Penang (Uplands) before being admitted to the prestigious Harrow School in London. During his time at Harrow, he befriended students from powerful families, including Middle Eastern and Brunei royalty. After graduating from Harrow, Low enrolled in the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania’s undergraduate program, where he continued to develop ties with Malaysian as well as Kuwaiti and Jordanian interests and began managing money for his friends and family.
