Jeremy started boxing training at the age of 6. His father, a former boxer, trained him in boxing. When he was 7 years old, he used to go to a gym center in his village. There he used to watch boys training and weightlifting. From there he developed interest in weightlifting. Recalling those days in an interview, he said,
I used to watch boys training in a gym near my house. He used to lift weights. This excited me. This gave me the necessary encouragement to try my hand at the game. I went up to those guys at the gym and asked if they could teach me how to lift weights. I started doing it and started lifting weights with perfection. Maybe God wanted me to become a weightlifter one day.”
When he was 8 years old, his father’s boxing academy was closed due to some financial obligations. Jeremy then approached Malsawma Khiangte (his first coach) to provide professional training in weightlifting. Talking about this during an interview, Jeremy said,
I contacted Malsawma. He taught me professional weightlifting. He used to ask me to bring a bamboo and lift it slowly. They were 5 meters long and 20 mm wide. There were no weights on them, but it was actually harder to lift a stick than a weight because you had to know how to balance it. it’s really hard. I practiced day and night, picked up bamboo sticks and learned the art of balancing.
