USC’s new athletic director is Jennifer Cohen.
President Carol L. Folt named Jennifer Cohen as USC’s new athletic director on Monday. After participating in intercollegiate athletics for more than three decades, Cohen will join a renowned college track and field program on Tuesday.
Cohen comes to USC from the University of Washington, where she served as athletic director for the past seven years, and will serve as the Charles Griffin Cale Chair of Athletics. She worked in Washington for 25 years and previously held numerous positions in intercollegiate athletics administration at Pacific Lutheran University, University of Puget Sound and Texas Tech University. She will be the first woman in the role and the tenth director of athletics at USC.
Folt noted, “We set the bar high when describing the requirements for our next director of athletics. “We had a tremendous roster of outstanding individuals who wanted to attend USC and triumph on the highest platform. Jen Cohen really stood out because of her background, dedication to student achievement, and well-known team-building skills. She is a formidable competitor who, like all Trojans, is driven by ethical triumph. She will lead with a culture of honesty, cooperation and commitment to success, I am convinced.
Cohen, a native of Southern California, expressed her excitement to join the Trojan family at this crucial time. The USC community’s desire to always fight with integrity and unwavering passion in the pursuit of excellence on and off the field is something Cohen said he has long respected. The opportunity to return to Southern California as USC’s Director of Athletics and formally become a member of the Trojan Family is a once-in-a-lifetime privilege.
Strong emphasis on student academic and athletic achievement under new USC athletic director
During the hiring process, Folt claimed to have consulted with a large number of student-athletes, coaches, employees and other parties. Folt asserted that Cohen meets all the essential requirements for the job and places great emphasis on the academic and athletic achievements of his students. The university was assisted by Parker Executive Search throughout the process.
One of Folt’s “intentions” for the institution is to reinvent athletics. Her goal is to create the best athletic program in the country, complete with elite leadership and modernized facilities. In a sweeping round of improvements, she recently unveiled the university’s strategic plan for all 21 athletic programs.
These improvements include the construction of Rawlinson Stadium, the new home of the USC women’s lacrosse and soccer teams, as well as significant upgrades to Dedeaux Field and the Galen Center arena for USC baseball. Future improvements will include, among other things, an expansion of the John McKay Center, improvements to the student-athlete dining hall and upgrades to the golf driving range.
The opening of Rawlinson Stadium, which will be the premier home for the Women of Troy when it is completed in 2025, coincides with a landmark year for Title IX, the historic law that has powered women’s sports for the past 50 years.
This strategic vision, along with other components of Folt’s athletics movement, positions USC Athletics for long-term success through Title IX compliance, world-class facilities and creative use of space. The university is also putting together a number of sites for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
These adjustments are being made ahead of USC’s planned admission to the Big Ten, a league that values both academic and athletic achievement. USC Athletics achieved the 2023 NCAA Multi-Year Academic Progress Rate of 990, shattering the previous department record. USC’s student-athlete graduation success rate reached an all-time high of 93% in 2022, marking the ninth consecutive year that this important metric has increased.
27 First Team All-Americans and 16 All-Pac-12 First Team members were awarded to USC student-athletes during the 2022-2023 academic year; 11 teams finished in the top 25; 16 teams appeared in the postseason; and USC was named the champion of the Crosstown Cup. In addition, USC football went undefeated at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in the 2022 season under coach Lincoln Riley, and Caleb Williams won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the school’s sixth official trophy winner in college football history. In addition, USC’s women’s beach volleyball team won its third straight NCAA title.
Six USC teams, including men’s basketball, football, tennis and volleyball, as well as women’s basketball and golf, recruited and signed the top player in their 2023 classes, a hopeful sign for the future.
When it comes to college athletics, USC is a national power. Cohen stated, “I look forward to honoring the Trojan legacy while working with the incredible USC Athletics team as we embrace both the opportunities and challenges of this complex moment.”
