In 2013, Jitu Patwari contested the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly election as an Indian National Congress candidate from Rau constituency and won against Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Jitu Jirati by a margin of 18,559 votes. In 2018, he contested the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly election from Rau constituency and won against Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Madhu Verma by a margin of 5,703 votes.

In December 2018, he was appointed as the Cabinet Minister for Higher Education, Youth and Sports Affairs in the Government of Madhya Pradesh under the government of Kamal Nath; However, he resigned in March 2020 due to the 2020 Madhya Pradesh political crisis. In 2018, he was also appointed the working president of Madhya Pradesh Congress. On 1 April 2020, he became the president of Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) media cell.
