Jay-Z Celebrates Grammys for Never Awarding Beyoncé ‘Album of the Year’ During Acceptance Speech

Jay-Z attacked the Grammys and pointed out how they continue to fail by not giving Beyoncé the coveted Album of the Year award.

At the 2024 Grammys, Trevor Noah presented the rapper with the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. This prestigious award celebrates Black music creators whose unwavering commitment to their craft has had a profound impact on the industry.

Jay-Z took the Grammy stage with his daughter Blue Ivy, while Beyoncé watched from the audience. “First of all, thank you to Dr. Dre… all the doors you opened,” Jay-Z said. “It is an honor to accept it.” He later thanked the Black Music Collective and said, “Hopefully, I’m contributing to what you guys are doing here.”

Jay-Z mentioned how in 1989, Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff boycotted the Grammy Awards after learning that the new category for best rap performance would not be televised. Inspired by his bold move, Jay-Z reflected on his own journey when he was nominated for best rap album in 1998, while the late DMX received no nominations.

“We want everyone to do well. We love you all. At least get it closer to the right thing. And obviously, it’s subjective because it’s music. And it is based on opinions,” he added.

Jay-Z criticizes Grammys for snubbing Beyoncé

Jay-Z then talked about his wife Beyoncé never winning the prestigious Grammy category for Album of the Year. During last year’s Grammys, Beyoncé made history by winning a remarkable 32 awards, setting a new record for most wins at an awards show.

“I don’t want to embarrass this young woman, but she has the most Grammys of anyone and she’s never won album of the year. So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that: the most Grammy Awards. She never won album of the year. That does not work. Some of you will go home and feel like you’ve been robbed. [Others] you may be robbed. “Some of you don’t fall into that category,” Jay-Z noted.

This comment raised eyebrows among the Grammy audience. “When I get nervous I tell the truth,” Jay-Z replied. “But other than that, we have to keep showing up,” he added. “Keep showing up until they give you all those praises you think you deserve. Until they call you president. Until they call you the greatest of all time.”

Images of the electric moment came to X (formerly Twitter).

Jay-Z has achieved notable success throughout his career, racking up an impressive 24 Grammy Awards and 88 nominations. His initial triumph came in 1998 when he won the Grammy for Best Rap Album with vol. 2… Hard life.

It should be noted that he shares the distinction of being the rapper with the most Grammy Awards in history, a record he holds along with Kanye West.

At this year’s Grammys, female artists dominated all three major categories. SZA led with nine nominations, followed by Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Miley Cyrus and boygenius with six nominations each.
