building a wrestler
The story of Divya’s wrestling career started in the 1990s. This was the dream of his father, who came to Delhi in 1990 to become a wrestler. After struggling for a few months in Delhi, he failed to achieve his goal and returned to his village. Then he started selling milk in the nearby areas, but he did not get success in this business. Later, he decided to move to Delhi with his wife and started the business of langot (undergarment which is usually worn by male wrestlers). His wife used to sew loincloths, which he used to sell to wrestlers during wrestling matches.
During such wrestling matches, he also used to take his son Dev Sain and daughter Divya Kakran along with him. Divya’s father wanted his son to become a wrestler and his dream of becoming a wrestler should be fulfilled. It was from here that Divya started getting interested in wrestling and she used to carefully watch the moves of the wrestlers. At the age of 8, he started practicing wrestling with his brothers. One of his wrestling matches in 2010 came into limelight when he defeated a boy by a good margin. After this he participated in various wrestling competitions like Rural Games, Rajiv Gold Cup, National Sports Competition, Asian Championship and World Championship. In 2013, he achieved fifth place in the World Championships held in Serbia. According to media sources, Divya’s opponent punched her inappropriately in the match and she was banned for almost two years. In 2018, she defeated Indian wrestler Ritu Malik in a wrestling competition and received the title of Bharat Kesari. He also defeated Indian wrestler Geeta Phogat in the same competition. In 2019, he started working as a Senior Ticket Examiner in Indian Railways.
His wrestling coaches are Vikram Kumar Sonkar and Prem Nath.
Controversy
In 2018, in a conference with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, he criticized him for negligence in providing financial assistance to him. Earlier he had requested the CM for financial help.
After winning the bronze medal at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, the Delhi government did not honor him with a cash prize because he represented Uttar Pradesh. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj said,
She lives in Delhi, but represented the national capital only until 2016–17. CM Kejriwal called him respectfully in 2018. We have always respected him, but we cannot give him a cash reward because he represented UP.
Responding to the petition on Delhi government not honoring her, Divya said in a press conference,
I have been living in Golakpur for the last 22 years. My father somehow managed to get me wrestling training here. I earned money by competing with boys but the Delhi government did not give me any kind of assistance. My family was facing a lot of problems due to poor financial condition, so I went to UP. Earlier, I had won many medals for Delhi.
