Jatin Das is an Indian painter, sculptor, graphic artist and muralist. He is also an acclaimed poet and writer. He is a contemporary artist who uses oil, acrylic, watercolour, ink and conté (hardened crayon made from clay) in his paintings. Etching, drypoint, lithograph and serigraph edition are forms of prints that he paints. Nationally and internationally, Jatin Das has organized more than 68 one-man exhibitions. Wrapped Woman, Shakti, Interaction, Shringaar, Krishna, Radha Krishna Ganapati, Radhika, The Presence, Woman in Stance and Classical Torso are some of the major paintings of Jatin Das.

early life
Jatin Das was born in Mayurbhanj district of Orissa and brought up in a middle-class Bengali family. His family culture inclined him towards Indian forms of art and culture. In his childhood, he used to worship the gods by singing religious songs, which eventually made him a music lover when he grew up. During his stay in Bombay he would often attend live concerts of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.

Jatin Das spent over sixty years establishing a large personal collection of traditional hand fans. This collection of hand fans is mainly from the Indian subcontinent and is often displayed in many museums and workshops in India and globally such as the Victoria Memorial in Calcutta, the Fan Museum in London, the National Gallery of Art in Kuala Lumpur, the Rietberg Museum in Zurich , and the National Museum in Manila. Jatin Das has worked for the Indian Postal Service by drafting postage stamps on road safety, world peace and the International Red Cross. He is the founder of ‘The Poetry Society’, New Delhi and co-editor of Blunt: Poetry Magazine, Bombay, which he founded in 1964 with R. Parthasarathy and Indrasen M. Jayakar. In 1997, Jatin Das established a registered trust named JD Center of Art (JDCA) to promote various forms of art and Indian culture by placing his collections in this trust. An eminent architect B.V. Doshi prepared the structure of this trust.

Apart from being a painter and cultural artist, Jatin Das is also an acclaimed writer. Jatin Das released a book titled “The Art of Jatin Das” in 2003. A collection of poems titled ”Poems by Jatin Das” was released by Jatin Das in 1972 under the publishing house ‘Writers Workshop Calcutta’. Later, a book titled ‘To Stir the Still Air’ based on Jatin Das’s fan collection was published by Mapin International.

In 2015, Jatin Das was awarded D.Litt. (Honorary Degree) from Indira Kala Sangeet University, Khairagarh. In 2012, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan award by the Government of India. In 2010, Jatin Das earned the degree of D.Litt. (Honorary Degree) from Ravenshaw University, Odisha. In 2007, Jatin Das was awarded the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity by the Italian President in New Delhi. In the same year, he earned the Bharat Nirman Award and Seminar Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar. In 2007 he was awarded the degree of D.Litt. (Honorary Degree) from Utkal Sanskriti University, Bhubaneswar. In 2006, he was awarded the Utkal Award by the Governor of Bengal in Kolkata.
Controversy
In 2018, Nisha Bora, co-founder of Elrhino Paper, had accused Jatin Das of sexual harassment. In her statement to the police, she said that when she had gone to meet Jatin Das at his studio, he forcibly kissed her and sexually assaulted her. Amid the #MeToo movement in India, another woman named Garusha Katoch had also accused Jatin Das of sexual misconduct. After this, Indian Express newspaper journalist Anushree Majumdar had accused Jatin Das of sexual misconduct. Later, Jatin Das publicly stated that he did not even know these women and that the allegations against him were obscene.
Facts/General Knowledge
- Jatin Das is known for his philanthropic activities in India. He came into limelight for his charitable work in 1999 when the super cyclone hit Orissa. Soon, a charitable relief and rehabilitation project was started by Jatin Das in several villages of the affected area. Apart from the Orissa cyclone tragedy, Jatin Das conducted twelve artist camps and four workshops on his artwork in his career to raise funds for fourteen charitable shows in India.
