Jamyang Tsering Namgyal was born on Sunday, 4 August 1985 (age 34 years; as in 2019) in Matho village, Ladakh. He received his primary education from the Central Institute of Buddhist Studies, Leh.

He studied Bachelor of Arts from Jammu University. When Jamyang was in college, he was the president of the All Ladakh Student Association (ALSA) for a year.

Jamyang Tsering Namgyal follows Buddhism. His father, Stanzin Dorje, is a carpenter in the Military Engineering Service. His mother Ishi Putit is a housewife. He comes from a farmer family. He has one sister, Tsering Lhamo. Jamyang married Sonam Wangmo on 22 February 2019. Sonam is an assistant professor in a university in Jammu and Kashmir.

In 2012, when Jamyang was in college, he joined the BJP. On 1 January 2013, he was appointed as the BJP spokesperson and in-charge of state affairs in Ladakh. In 2014, Jamyang was given the responsibility of handling the election campaign of former Ladakh MP Thupstan Chhewang. On 3 November 2015, Jamyang contested the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) election from Martselang constituency. He won with a record margin and was elected councilor of LAHDC. On 1 December 2015, Jamyang was appointed as the Additional Media Secretary of the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir. On 19 June 2018, when the Executive Councilor (Chairman) of LAHDC resigned, Jamyang was elected as the Chairman of LAHDC. By then his popularity had increased significantly and he was elected unopposed. Jamyang was also appointed the district president of BJP in Leh.

In 2019, the BJP announced Jamyang’s name as its Lok Sabha candidate from the Ladakh Lok Sabha constituency. Jamyang campaigned for months. His two primary promises to the people of Ladakh were Union Territory (UT) status for Ladakh, and inclusion of the Ladakhi language, Bhoti, in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Since Jamyang had risen from the grassroots level to become the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate, he campaigned in the same style. Jamyang went door-to-door and explained to the people of Ladakh the benefits of Ladakh being a Union Territory. He won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Ladakh with the largest majority ever in a general election.

On 17 June 2019, Jamyang Namgyal was sworn in as MP in the Lok Sabha. On 6 August 2019, Jamyang gave a speech in Parliament in favor of the repeal of Article 370 and Article 35A. He said that he supports this decision along with the people of Ladakh. He said that he wants to make Ladakh a relevant and major union territory of India. His speech went viral on the internet. Reportedly, people on social media said that his speech was very good and the way Jamyang spoke for the welfare of the people of Ladakh in a tough stance was commendable. His speech was appreciated by Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Smriti Irani and many others. Narendra Modi also tweeted a link to his speech in Parliament. He praised him and also said that his speech must be heard.
