Jamshed J Irani (1936–2022) was an Indian industrialist and is best known as the Managing Director (MD) of Tata Steel Limited. On 31 October 2022, he died of natural causes at Tata Memorial Hospital, Jamshedpur.

Jamshed Jiji Irani was born on Tuesday, 2 June 1936 (age 86 years at death) in Nagpur district, Central Provinces and Berar, British India (now Nagpur, Maharashtra, India). After completing his schooling, he joined the Science College, Nagpur, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1956. In 1958, he earned a master’s degree in MSc Geology after which he moved to the United Kingdom, where he earned a master’s degree in Metallurgy from the University of Sheffield in 1960. After completing his master’s degree in metallurgy, he received a PhD in metallurgy from the University of Sheffield in 1963.

Jamshed J Irani’s career in corporate began in 1963 after completing his PhD in Metallurgy in the United Kingdom. From 1963 to 1968, Jamshed J Irani worked as a senior scientific officer at the British Iron and Steel Research Association (BISRA). At BISRA, Jamshed received promotion and was made head of the Physical Metallurgy Division (PMD); However, according to several sources, Jamshed wanted to work for his own country rather than a foreign country, as a result of which he decided to leave his job in the UK and returned to India in 1968, where he joined the Tata Iron and Steel Company. (TISCO), which was renamed Tata Steel Limited in 2005. There, he worked as assistant to the director-in-charge of research and development until 1978, after which he was promoted and made general superintendent (GS) of TISCO. , In 1979, Jamshed was once again promoted and made General Manager (GM) by TISCO. In 1981, he became a board member of TISCO, a position he held until 2011. Tata Iron and Steel Company once again promoted Jamshed and appointed him Chairman of TISCO. In 1988, Jamshed became Joint Managing Director (JMD) of the company, a position he held until 1992 when he took over as General Manager of TISCO. He held the position of General Manager until his retirement in 2001. In 1993, the Tata Group gave Jamshed additional charge of Tata Sons Private Limited and made him its director. In the same year, the Tata Group appointed Jamshed as a board member of Tata Motors. Jamshed GG Irani retired from all his appointments in the Tata Group in 2011.

Awards, Honors, Achievements

  • In 1997, Jamshed GG Irani was awarded the Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II, former Queen of England.

Death

On October 31, 2022, at 10 pm, Jamshed GG Irani passed away when he was admitted to Tata Main Hospital (TMH), Jamshedpur due to natural causes. Tata Steel Limited said in its official statement,

India’s steel man passes away. Tata Steel announces with deep sorrow the demise of Padma Bhushan Dr Jamshed J Irani. He died at TMH (Tata Main Hospital), Jamshedpur on October 31, 2022 at 10 pm. The Tata Steel family expresses its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
