Early life
Jamel was born on October 30, 1985 in Rockville Centre, New York, United States. Starting in 2022, it is 36 years old. Jamel Herring was raised in Coram, New York, as the son of Michael Herring and Jeanine Herring. He is of African American descent and holds American nationality.
Professional life
Semper Fi began boxing in 2001 when trainer Austin Hendrickson invited him to work out at his boxing gym. On July 20, 2002, he lost his first amateur match to Daniel Jacobs in the Finals of the New York Youth Olympic Games.
He was a US Marine, so it was difficult to juggle his time dedicated to boxing. After returning from his marine assignment, he was able to play a few games while still in the service. He made the difficult decision to end his service as a US Marine and pursue a career in boxing.

According to The Ring and the Transnational Boxing Ranking Board, he is the fourth best active lightweight in the world as of the junior session as of November 2020.

The father of six is a retired United States Marine. In 2004, he became a father for the first time when his son Kamren Herring was born. Ariana Herring was born in 2009, Jamel Herring Jr. was born in 2010, Jazmyne Herring was born in 2013 and Justice Herring was born in 2017. Their daughter Ariana, who was just a baby when she died on July 27, was a huge loss to them.
