Jagjit Kaur was an Indian singer and wife of the famous Indian musician Mohammad Zahoor Khayyam (aka Khayyam). He died on 15 August 2021.

Jagjit Kaur was born in the year 1931 (age at the time of death was 93 years) in Punjab. Since childhood, she was interested in films and music and would often participate in cultural programs organized in her school.
Family, Caste and Husband
He was born in an elite Punjabi landlord family. She married veteran musician Mohammad Zahoor Khayyam in 1954. They had a son named Pradeep Khayyam, who died of a heart attack on 25 March 2012.
livelihood
He made his singing debut with the Punjabi film “Posti (1950)”. She made her Bollywood debut as a singer in the film “Dil-e-Nadaan (1953)” under the composition of Ghulam Mohammed. She sang three songs in the film – “Mohabbat Ki Dhun Bekararon Se Poochho,” “Chanda Gaye Ragni Cham Cham Barse,” and “Khamosh Zindagi Ko Ek Afsana Mil Gaya.” However, this could not help him gain much recognition.
After a decade of marriage with Khayyam, she sang her career best song ‘Tum Apna Ranj-o-Gum’ from the film “Shagoon (1964)”. This song became the benchmark of his career.

On August 15, 2021, at the age of 93, Jagjit Kaur breathed her last at her residence in Mumbai. He died due to age related disease. His last rites were performed at Pawan Hans Crematorium, SV Road Vile Parle, Mumbai.

- Jagjit’s father was against her marriage with Khayyam, but she was determined that she would marry Khayyam only. Despite her father’s disapproval, her marriage with Khayyam was one of the first inter-communal marriages in the film industry.
- In her short singing career, she became one of the most versatile singers of Bollywood. From folk songs like ‘Laadi Re Laadi’ from ‘Shola Aur Shabnam (1961)’ to melodious music like ‘Tum Apna Ranj-o-Gum’ from ‘Shagoon (1964), Jagjit touched every shade of singing. Traditional wedding songs, such as “Kahe Ko Byahi Bides,” “Chale Aao Saiya,” and “Dekh Lo Aaj Humko,” were all for Khayyam and are considered ornaments.
- However, she has sung fewer songs than her contemporaries Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar; All his songs are considered gems.
- In an interview, Jagjit Kaur revealed that even after singing an evergreen classic song like “Tum Apna Ranj-O-Gum” from “Shagoon (1964)”, Khayyam never proposed her name to the producers.
- When Khayyam turned 90, Khayyam and Jagjit decided to donate all their earnings to their charitable trust, ‘Khayyam Jagjit Kaur KPG Charitable Trust’. Talking about this, Khayyam said,
I have decided that I will donate my entire wealth to help the artistes and technicians who are in need of the film industry. I have given everything to my motherland.”
- Reportedly, Jagjit Kaur was a classmate of former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh. In 2006, Manmohan took time out from his busy schedule to meet Jagjit Kaur and her husband Khayyam.
- In August 2019, Khayyam fell while trying to get up from his chair at his home and had to be admitted to Sujay Hospital in Juhu. After this incident, Jagjeet suffered a worrying drop in his blood sugar levels. Jagjit and Khayyam were allotted adjacent cabins in the hospital named ‘Lily’ and ‘Tulip’. Khayyam died on 19 August 2019 due to cardiac arrest.
