talking to People At the film’s Los Angeles premiere this week, Jacob spoke about the reaction.

“They showed me the design when I went to audition and I saw the movie last night and, I have to say, I think it really worked,” he shared. “I think they were geniuses and they knew exactly what they were doing.”

Jacob added that he thinks it “works perfectly. I think it matches everything. So if it were different, I don’t think it would really work.”

Critics of the film have criticized the fish and how it looks a bit too real compared to the animated version, which was depicted as a bright yellow fish with blue stripes.

The little Mermaid opens in theaters on May 26.
