News Jacob Degrom

Rangers general manager Chris Young said Tuesday that Texas pitcher Jacob deGrom’s extra ligament in his pitching elbow will be repaired with Tommy John surgery. DeGrom will have surgery next week and from that date, he will likely be absent for more than just the first two months of 2024.

“This is terrible. According to the Dallas Morning News, deGrom told reporters: “It’s not ideal.” But now at least we’re aware of what it is. I’ll aim to be back before the end of the year to get things sorted out.

Last summer, Rangers signed deGrom to a five-year, $185 million deal. The Tommy John surgery clause in that deal now gives Texas a sixth club option, worth between $20 million and $37 million, depending on voting and innings. There are more and more conditions for Tommy John to have surgery, and so is Luis Castillo’s contract with the Seattle Mariners.

Before leaving the April 28 game against the New York Yankees with forearm numbness, a common sign before Tommy John surgery, deGrom, 34, had made six starts and threw 30 and a half innings this season. In an attempt to rejoin the team, deGrom has just started throwing bullfighting sessions, but he seems to have a sore elbow again.

DeGrom will undergo the second Tommy John procedure of his career. In October 2010, while still a minor league prospect for the New York Mets, he underwent his first elbow surgery. While the second Tommy John surgery is often more dangerous than the first and requires a longer recovery time, the surgery is less risky now than it was five to 10 years ago.

Take the aforementioned Eovaldi for example. Eovaldi has been one of the best pitchers in baseball since Rangers signed him to a two-year, $34 million deal last winter. He threw a tournament record of 80 innings 1/3 with a 2.24 ERA. In 2007 he underwent his first Tommy John surgery and two years later in 2016.

DeGrom dominated baseball as a pitcher from 2015 to 2019, setting an ERA of 2.61 with 1,111 shots in 961 1/3 innings. DeGrom’s two-year highlight reel from 2018-19 was historically impressive — 2.05 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 524 strikeouts in 421 innings — and helped the Mets win two NL Cy Young titles. He also finished third in the 2020 NL Cy Young voting.

But DeGrom’s final three seasons were hampered by injuries. In 2021, elbow problems left him with just 15 appearances and the season ended in July. His 2022 season debut was pushed back to August due to shoulder problems. DeGrom only made 32 appearances between 2021 and 2023, when he was 33 and 35, due to a string of arm injuries, but those were all good starts.
