controversies
quarrel with AR Rahman
In 2011, Ismail Darbar had accused Indian music director AR Rahman of buying the Oscar Award. Ismail publicly stated that Rahman’s Oscar for Best Original Score for the film “Slumdog Millionaire” was not worthy and he bought it. Ismail said in an interview,
Don’t be dishonest with your work, friend. If I have said it, I have said it. Ever since I saw Rahman’s PR and found him away from music, I was irritated with him. At first I liked him because it seems there is something about this man, he thinks differently. But when he came to know that he was busy in PR, he should get an Oscar, he should get a Grammy, apart from that he could not understand anything. And you see his work is getting messed up.”
Meaning,
I said what I said. When I saw that Rahman was spending more time on PR than his art, I started getting irritated with him. I liked him initially, I thought he was unique. But when I saw that he was only planning to win an Oscar and make waves overseas, I saw that his work was going to waste).
Later he changed his statement and said that Rehman was his friend. He also apologized for his comments. While Rehman denied all such allegations and even shared that he will not file any case against Ismail.
