Tom Cruise returns for the second installment of top gun, which promises to be an improvement over the first. Cruise may be an experienced pilot, but the military doesn’t hand over the keys to one of its most precious assets to anyone with a license to fly.
The military hasn’t given a reason why it didn’t offer Cruise the F-18 Super Hornet, but we think money has a lot to do with it. The plane costs $70 million, nearly half the film’s $152 budget. Few insurers would accept to insure the possible damages of an aircraft of this type.
Also, despite having a pilot’s license, Cruise may not have the necessary skill to fly an F-18 safely — putting one in his hands would put lives in danger. The crew and cast filmed using real F-18 aircraft flown by trained Navy pilots.
