The penultimate episode of Are recently aired, and in keeping with the rest of the entire series, we needed a box of tissues to stream it. It seemed unlikely that Kate would return home to say goodbye to her mother, Rebecca. The nurse had predicted that Rebecca wouldn’t make it through the night, but she stayed alive long enough for Kate to arrive.
With the final episode scheduled to air on May 24, 2022, show creator Dan Fogelman told fans to prepare for a “day of meditation.” Regardless, we and many fans will be disappointed to see the series finale.
There are no plans to extend Are in a new season or movie
dan fogelman said ABC News that the plan was always to finish Are after six seasons. He knew the fans would want more, but he decided to complete the story in season six.
“If we had done something differently, it would have happened for the wrong reasons,” Fogelman said. “A lot of them are beautiful reasons, because I really enjoy these people that I work with, because the program is lucrative, because it’s so successful. But creatively, I feel like we’ve done the right thing.”
Knowing that fans will tune in, there’s always the temptation to extend popular shows like Are. It can lead to content dilution, but the number of viewers guarantees that it will be a profitable venture.
Fogelman did not wish to maximize profits, and therefore had no incentive to drag the story past its preset ending. He said the hollywood reporter:
“We never set out to make a television series that was going to last 18 seasons, so we have a very direct plan. We have a plan for what we’re going to do, and I know what the plan is.”
Dan said that the production team knew enough about the ending that about half of the final episode was filmed “three or four years ago”. In May 2021, Dan tweeted that it would be hard to end Are but he expressed his determination to stick with the original plan. Fogelman tweeted:
“Whoever first casually said ‘All good things must come to an end’ never had to finish their favorite thing. While it’s sad that there’s only 1 season left, I’m also grateful to NBC for allowing us to end the show how and when we always wanted. We will work hard to keep the landing.”
All signs indicate that Are it’s over forever. The creators have no plans for a new season, spinoff series, or movie.
Are the stars seem pleased with the completion of the show
Most Are the stars expressed joy and sadness at the imminent completion of the show. They took to social media to convey their emotions about the series. Mandy Moore wrote on Instagram:
“I have not yet begun to process the end of this trip and I am sure it will take time. I’m still kicking myself over what I had planned to say to our amazing team and then broke down and forgot about the emotion…but I hope the gratitude passes through.”
moore said ABC News that saying goodbye to the show was difficult. He added that the material never subsided throughout the entire show. “I don’t go a day without saying thank you for the material,” Mandy said. “It’s a dream on every level.”
The outlet asked Moore about the possibility of a spin-off or a movie. He ruled out the possibility of a new project related to Areciting Fogelman’s determination to end the story as planned.
“We are very grateful to be able to do that and honor him,” Mandy said. “I feel like the audience will be incredibly pleased with the way things wrap up.”
