Lori Lightfoot is an American attorney serving as the 56th Mayor of Chicago. Before joining the City Council, Ella Lori was famous as a ruthless private sector lawyer and administrative leader in Chicago. Lightfoot ran for mayor against Toni Preckwinkle in February 2019. She then won in a landslide in the runoff in April 2019.
Lightfoot is the first openly gay mayor of a major city in the United States. His family played an important role in choosing him.
Lori and her wife Amy Eshleman were married the day Illinois legalized same-sex marriage
Lori was born in Massillon, Ohio to a deeply religious family. She found out that she was gay during her time at the University of Michigan in the 1980s. Lori herself, however, did not know how her family would react to the news. However, she decided to talk to her family and, luckily, they accepted her. lori said The Chicago Tribune:
“My parents were conservative Christians, they went to church, they studied the Bible on Wednesday nights, Sunday school. My mother was a church secretary for years. My father was an usher. We didn’t know anyone who was out at the time who was in our family…it wasn’t a problem. My dad couldn’t have been nicer.”
Lightfoot gained confidence thanks to the support of his family and began to publicly display his sexual orientation. She made things a little difficult for him at work, but he didn’t mind because she was proud to be herself.
Lori and Amy met through mutual friends. They began a relationship and got married the day Illinois made same-sex marriage legal. Amy told him The Chicago Tribune that it was important for the couple to get married that day:
“You want certain things for yourself, and falling in love and having a family and doing all of those things seemed very important to us. Being able to get married that day made me feel really good.”
Chicago has made great strides when it comes to creating an equal environment for people, regardless of their sexuality. However, Lori and Amy are still facing backlash from anonymous groups that refuse to accept the LGBTQ+ community. Amy is not concerned with these groups and she is determined to play as important a role as possible in ensuring equality for the LGBTQ+ community.
Lightfoot’s daughter, Vivian, was not happy that Lori made her first TikTok video without her.
Like most teenagers in the world, Lori’s daughter Vivian is obsessed with TikTok. Lori told David Axelrod about the ax files that Vivian had been trying to get her parents to make a video with her, but they refused. Lori ended up making her first TikTok video of herself without Vivian, and her daughter wasn’t amused. Lori explained:
“When I came home that night and said, ‘By the way, I just did my first TikTok, of course her reaction was, ‘I can’t believe you did it with someone else and you didn’t do it with me.’ ‘ This is the life of a 12-year-old boy.
Vivian is a student athlete majoring in track and field and basketball. She had just recovered from a broken leg before the coronavirus pandemic hit and delayed her return to the court. She spent most of her quarantine time studying from home and playing virtual games with her friends. Lory added:
“But it’s hard. This would be a time when she would be off the court. She’s an athletic kid. She missed a lot of her basketball season with a broken leg, so she really wanted to keep going. And then, it came COVID.
