“The kind of things that he came up with when he was young were always amazing. When he was very little, he would ask me ‘where is the whole world?’ when he was three or four years old. It was these kinds of questions that made me realize that he was a little bit different.”
Elon and his brother, Kimbal, studied at Pretoria Boys High School while Errol earned money developing property and consulting. Errol spoke with Forbes about Elon’s enthusiasm when it came to computers. At the age of 11, Elon managed to participate in a conference on new computers.
Errol had to pull some strings and pay 75 rand to get Elon in, but it turned out to be worth it. Errol said Forbes that Elon impressed more than the experts from England. He explained:
“There was Elon in his jacket, tie, and shirtsleeves rolled up on his long gray flannel pants, and about four feet tall, talking to all these guys from England. As he approached me, one of these teachers, who didn’t even bother to introduce himself, said that this kid needs to get his hands on one of these computers. So we got one, thank goodness at a discount.”
Using that computer, Elon taught himself to program. He went on to become the success he is today, just like his brothers. Kimbal is a millionaire and Tosca is a film producer. “He’s done well his whole life,” Errol told Forbes. When asked what worries him about Elon, Errol said:
“As far as Elon is concerned, I’m worried, now what? What is there? I start to worry about boredom. I’m worried that he’ll get bored of sending things to NASA every week or two. I mean this is getting old fashioned… He’s one of those people, and he certainly was when he was a kid, if he suddenly decides he’s not interesting anymore, he just dumps him. However, I doubt it will.
