News about Iona Wells
A child who was arrested for sexually assaulting a student wrote an open letter about her experience. Ione Wells, a 20-year-old student at Oxford University, was attacked last month as she was walking home in the Camden area. The unidentified 17-year-old was sentenced to two years in juvenile detention at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court.
After admitting to sexual assault at a previous hearing, he was told he would serve the first half of his sentence while on probation. The teen will also spend five years on the sex offender registry. During the hearing, he allegedly grabbed Ms Wells from behind and pushed her to the ground, causing her to hit her head on the concrete.
Then he roughly grabbed her breasts, ripping her bra in half. Ms Wells described the attack as the most horrific event of her life and left her feeling “stricken and traumatized” in a victim impact statement. She claimed to have experienced flashbacks and heard footsteps.
The 17-year-old’s defense lawyer offered clemency, saying the boy “deeply regrets” the attack and is “ready to prove” it will be his last.
However, the judge decided custody was necessary because the assault was so gruesome and would have lasting psychological effects on Ms Wells.
Ms Wells’ bitter letter to her attacker was first published in the student newspaper Cherwell after she lost her right to remain anonymous to discuss the attack. She claimed the supportive comments she received had “transformed” the “incredibly painful” experience.
“My community wouldn’t consider it unsafe for us to walk home after dark,” she said. We will not accept or accept the idea that taking the last subway ride home puts us at risk. Instead, we would get on our own cars and walk the streets. Even if you don’t always notice it, your community is there. It is present. It is popular.
After she was attacked and her letter published, Ms Wells launched the #NotGuilty campaign to promote the idea that sexual assault victims should never be held accountable.
