Candace Owens is an American conservative commentator who is never far from her next controversial comment. Owens doesn’t mince words when she speaks her mind, particularly when she addresses Democrats. Also, no one is immune to criticism from her. She condemned the #MeToo movement for “sexual assault trends” and stated that she does not see George Floyd as a hero or a martyr.
As a result, far-right advocates and President Donald Trump are big fans of Candace Owens. By contrast, the Democratic movement sees it in a different and sickening light.
This piece will look at Candace’s upbringing, her experience with racism, and her husband.
She was raised by her grandparents after her parents divorced.
Candace was born on April 29, 1989 in Stamford, Connecticut. She said that her grandparents raised her after her parents divorced her.
Owens has spoken highly of his grandfather during events and in some of his videos. In a 2018 video posted to Facebook, he claimed his grandfather was a North Carolina native and had worked on a farm since he was five years old. She stated:
“Jim Crow, separate drinking fountains, and the KKK were ever-present realities. I was seventeen when he married my grandmother. He made a living cleaning houses and office buildings until he saved enough money to open his own cleaning business… If they had problems, they didn’t blame anyone, they just fixed them. And I was raised to do the same.”
He developed an eating disorder after receiving racist threats from his schoolmates.
During Candace’s senior year of high school, she received racist voicemails from some of her classmates. The anonymous boys said that they would kill her just for being black. Owens was shocked and scared, and at first she did not want to report the incident. However, a teacher insisted that she tell the school principal.
Authorities traced the call and discovered that the son of then-Stamford mayor Daniel Malloy was involved. The involvement of a high-profile figure attracted the press, and as a result, Owen’s story hit the national airwaves. Candace wrote in an opinion piece for Stamford Lawyer stating that all he wanted was an apology, but he ended up getting more hate and becoming a political tool.
The media attention negatively affected Candace and she developed an eating disorder. She wrote:
“I hated Stamford. I hated Connecticut, but most of all, I hated myself. I hated when my name came up in a Google search for ‘hate crime’. I developed a severe eating disorder, to help me fight it. Skin against my bones for five years helped me feel like I had at least one aspect of my existence under control.”
One positive aspect of her eating disorder was that it helped her get a job with Fashion. Candace gradually recovered through yoga and visits to a life coach. Owens’ experience with bullying in high school inspired her to start an anti-cyberbullying website that would expose internet trolls. She received a lot of hate after launching the project and somehow concluded that the attacks were coming from liberals.
It was at this time that he had his ‘conservative awakening’. In a 2017 online talk show hosted by Dave Rubin, Owens stated, “I became a conservative overnight. I realized that the liberals were actually the racists. The liberals were really the trolls.”
Her husband, George Farmer, proposed to her two and a half weeks after the couple met.
George Farmer, Chairman of Turning Point UK, and Candace met at the launch of Turning Point UK in December 2018. After two and a half weeks of dating, George proposed to her via FaceTime. Candace revealed in The Candace Owens Show Part of the reason she accepted the proposal was that the most successful couples in her life got engaged soon after they met. She said:
“The people I meet in a relationship in my life where the relationships have lasted the longest always have very quick commitments. My grandparents had a very quick engagement. I know another couple who are twenty-five years old, they did it and they got married six months ago.
Farmer and Candace were married on August 31, 2019 at Trump Winery in Charlottesville, Virginia.
