Indira Jaisingh is one of the most famous Indian lawyers of the country, who was born on 3 June 1940 (Age 80 years; like in 2020) in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He was born in a Sindhi Hindu family and spent his childhood in Mumbai. His zodiac sign is Gemini. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bangalore University, and then he did an LLM from Bombay University in the year 1962. After completion of LLM, he started practicing law. He was inclined towards fighting for human rights and continues to be so.

Indira Jaisingh was born in a Sindhi Hindu family in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Indira Jaisingh grew up in Mumbai and completed her education to become a lawyer. She is married to Anand Grover, a senior lawyer working in the field of Indian law in relation to homosexuality and HIV. In 1981, both of them co-founded an NGO called ‘Lawyers Collective’, which was dedicated to feminists and leftist issues.

Indira Jaising represented the Bhopal gas tragedy victims in the Supreme Court of India who claimed compensation from the American multinational Union Carbide Corporation. She was also associated with the People’s Commission on Violence in Punjab to look into extrajudicial killings, disappearances and mass cremations that took place from 1979 to 1990. In 2015, he represented Priya Pillai in the Green Peace India case, and in 2016 he raised concerns over the process followed for the designation of senior advocates in the Supreme Court. Indira Jaisingh is a member of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, London and was a visiting scholar at Columbia University, New York.

  • In 2019, the CBI raided the homes and offices of senior Indian lawyers Indira Jaising and Anand Grover in connection with a case. The case was filed stating that the NGO, Lawyers Collective, had violated certain foreign donation norms. The case was filed in 2016 stating that the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) was being violated, and donations sent to the NGO were used for ‘political purposes’. The Union Home Ministry had canceled the FCRA license of the NGO. Although the government decided to unfreeze their accounts, the licenses were not renewed.
  • In January 2020, Indira Jaisingh had given a controversial statement saying that Asha Devi, mother of the 2012 Delhi gang rape victim, should forgive the culprits. This case was in the news a lot and Nirbhaya’s mother criticized Indira Jaising for making such a statement, even though she is a senior lawyer and is actively involved in the fight for women’s rights. Actress Kangana Ranaut also reacted to this statement and said that Indira Jaisingh should be kept in jail along with the culprits.
