Indira Banerjee is a judge of the Supreme Court of India. In Indian history, she is the eighth woman judge of the Supreme Court of India. In 2017–18, she was the second woman to be appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.

Indira Banerjee was born on Tuesday, 24 September 1957 (age 64 years; as in 2021) in Kolkata, West Bengal. His zodiac sign is Libra. Indira went to Loreto House in Kolkata for her schooling. Later, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in History (Honours) from Presidency College, Kolkata and an LLB from the Department of Law, University of Calcutta.

On 5 July 1985, she was enrolled as an advocate and started practicing law in the Calcutta High Court. He practiced law in the Calcutta High Court in all branches, both original and appellate, except criminal law. On 5 February 2002, he was appointed as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court. During his tenure at the Calcutta High Court, he also served as Chairman of the Calcutta High Court Service Committee for four years. For a period of one year, he was appointed as the acting Chairman of the West Bengal State Legal Services Authority. In July 2013, he was enrolled for training in judicial administration at the Civil Services College, Singapore for seven days. He was nominated for this training by the then Chief Justice of India. On 8 August 2016, he was transferred to Delhi High Court. During his tenure at the Delhi High Court, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Delhi State Legal Services Authority. On 5 April 2017, he took charge of the Madras High Court as Chief Justice, succeeding Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul when he was appointed to the Supreme Court of India. Indira Banerjee is the second woman to head the Madras High Court, after Justice Kanta Kumari Bhatnagar.

The notification issued by the Government of India on his appointment to the Madras High Court read as,

In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Miss Justice Indira Banerjee, Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, as Judge of the Supreme Court of India. With effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”

On 7 August 2018, Indira Banerjee was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India until her retirement on 24 September 2022. She is one of the four women judges of the Supreme Court, along with Justice BV Nagarathna, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Bela M Trivedi. On September 1, 2021, nine judges took oath in a single day in the history of the Supreme Court. The names of these judges were Justice Abhay Srinivas Oka, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Justice Hima Kohli, Justice BV Nagarathna, Justice CT Ravikumar, Justice MM Sundaresh, Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice PS Narasimha.

  • Speaking to Free Press Media House, Indira revealed that she never went to court during her third and fourth year of law studies at Calcutta University. He said,

    When I went to court I went to watch a case being heard and not as an intern. I listened to the request and it changed the course of my life. I was preparing for Civil Services Examination and had passed two stages. But then I decided to continue my practice in the High Court. I found that not all cases were interesting. After assisting my seniors in the High Court, I started practicing alone. I had very little knowledge about the practical aspects of law.”

  • In February 2019, while addressing a national conference on Economic Crimes and Emerging Dynamics and Dimensions held at the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy (TNSJA) at the Race Course, Indira said that misuse of public funds was an economic crime. He said,

  • In November 2019, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a meeting with Supreme Court lawyers that Indira Banerjee was his “guru-sister”. He said that both Indira Banerjee and Modi are devotees of Ramakrishna Mission. He had taken spiritual initiation from late Swami Atmasthananda. Modi lived in the Rajkot Ashram and according to Hindu tradition, those who have the same guru are brother and sister.
