Vampire Diaries Alumnus Ian Somerhalder left the glitz and glamor of Hollywood behind for a quiet life on a farm – and couldn’t be happier.
The actor says he doesn’t miss acting at all since he moved to a farm outside Los Angeles with his wife, Nikki Reed, and their two children: Bodhi, 6, and a 6-month-old son.
Instead of working to advance his career, Ian Somerhalder focuses on family and connecting with nature. “I love what I did for a long time,” he told E! News. “I love making movies, I did it for a long time. We had an incredible race.”
Although he fondly remembers his time on set and describes it as a “community” and a “family,” Somerhalder is focused on the new chapter in his life. “This is our version 2.0,” he said with a smile to his wife, “about to be version 3.0.”
With two young children, the couple hopes to create a better future for the next generation. “When you see the way nature operates, you find compassion,” Nikki Reed explained. “It’s beautiful to see what happens to the children, to see them participate in growing their food and understand what food is and where it comes from.”
Best known for her role as Rosalie Hale in the Twilight In the series, Reed says her shift toward slow living began long before her husband’s. Her seeds were planted in her. Twilight days.
“I started connecting the dots between what you do for the planet and what you do for yourself,” he said. “It is an evolution and a lifelong search. “It has become a much simpler way of living.”
Ian Somerhalder admits farm life is ‘a lot of work’
In addition to their two children, Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed care for 18 pets, both domesticated and farm-related. And although they are in love with life on the farm, Somerhalder can’t help but admit that managing things takes a lot of effort.
“Walking around the farm with kids, dogs and family,” the actor told E! November news. “At each stop, you pull yourself out of trees or bushes, pick yourself up off the ground, and feed everyone as you make your way around the farm.”
Among its fields of lavender and rosemary, cows roam and mini donkeys protect goats from prowling predators.
“It’s a lot of work,” Ian Somerhalder admitted before adding that all the effort is worth it. “It’s amazing when you see these amazing life forms, and how they all live together on the farm is really special.”
