“Retreat to do what?” he replied she when asked if she had any plans to do so.
Ian went on to explain why he is not considering it: “I have never been out of work, but I am aware that at any time something could happen to me that would prevent me from returning to work. But as long as the knees hold up and the memory remains intact, why shouldn’t I move on? I really feel like I’m pretty good at this acting thing now.”
However, he admits that the topic of his retirement has come up a lot lately and recalled one critic bringing up the idea after Ian forgot a line during previews for the play, “Frank and Percy.”
“Instead of understanding that this happens from time to time, this critic says it was evidence that it was time for Ian McKellen to stop acting,” Ian said. “Maybe I should challenge this man to a podcast where we can debate him.”
However, he says it may not be “a smart decision.” Maybe it just draws more attention. After all, I long ago made peace with criticism.”
Steve Martin and Woody Allen have also recently addressed the issue of retirement.
