Mortal Kombat 11 sees the return of many fan-favorite characters from previous games, but perhaps one of the biggest to make a comeback to the series is Frost. Frost has been absent, as a playable character anyway, in the last few Mortal Kombat titles in spite of a big portion of the fanbase demanding her return.
Unlike the other characters that are instantly available at launch, however, Frost is secret unlockable character who is unavailable when first launching the game. This is an interesting move by NeatherRealm studio, as Frost is the only character out of the 25 in the base game that the studio makes players jump through hoops to get. Luckily, unlocking Frost in Mortal Kombat 11 isn’t really all that difficult, as all it requires is playing through a certain section of the game’s included main story mode.
While playing the story mode for Mortal Kombat 11, you’ll want to get to the fourth chapter, which centers around the older versions of Sub-Zero and Scorpion infiltrating an enemy base and attempting to rescue Cyrax. Eventually they will come across Frost, who is working for main villain Kronika. The key to unlocking Frost is to simply beat chapter four with either Sub-Zero or Scorpion (or a healthy combination of the two) and she’ll be available afterward.
Mortal Kombat 11 changes Frost’s appearance up, giving her new attacks and a more robotic look (she’s technically a cyborg now). One of these moves even includes detaching her own head and using it as boomerang-like weapon, which is pretty much the kind of thing you’d expect from a Mortal Kombat character. Another attack involves shooting shards of ice from her midsection. While some in the past have criticized the character somewhat for having a moveset that too closely resembles Sub-Zero, the game goes a long way to change that perception.
There’s some misinformation circling that Frost can only be unlocked by beating Chapter 4 solely with Sub-Zero, but this is absolutely not the case. Any combination of the two characters (or one) will do the trick. Of course, if you’re impatient, you can purchase the character for money without playing the story mode at all. With how early into the story that Frost becomes available, though, this should really only be an option for those who really do not have the time or the patience to play the campaign at all. Either way, Frost is a nice addition to Mortal Kombat 11‘s huge roster of characters and she’s been retooled just enough to feel unique instead of just a Sub-Zero clone.
