Salman Rushdie, an Anglo-American writer of Indian descent, was stabbed several times before giving a presentation at the Chautauqua Institute in New York on Friday, August 12. According to multiple sources, Rushdie was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania. Rushdie was stabbed multiple times during the attack, including in the neck, abdomen and other areas. He also suffered multiple organ damage, including his liver and one eye, which could have caused him to lose his sight. On August 13, the author’s representative, Andrew Wylie, told Reuters:
“Salman will almost certainly lose an eye; the nerves in his arm were severed, his liver was stabbed and destroyed.”
Rushdie, 75, could not speak on Friday because he is on a ventilator. However, the world famous author’s health seems to have improved since then. Rushdie then “turned off the ventilator and talked (and laughed),” according to British writer Aatish Taseer.
Sales of Salman Rushdie’s books are currently skyrocketing on Amazon. I just bought 3 more of his books that I don’t own.

Salman Rushdie’s Net Worth and Literary Career
Salman Rushdie is estimated to be worth between $10 million and $15 million as of April 2023, according to statistics compiled from multiple online sources. Most of his money can be traced back to the most important event in his life: the publication of his divisive book, The Satanic Verses. Selling a book shortly after its 1988 release is not unusual. However, the portrayal of the Islamic prophet Muhammad in the Verses of Satan caused great outrage in Pakistan in February 1989. Later, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the late leader and former leader of Iran, issued a fatwa (Islamic legal statement) against Salman Rushdie and the book’s publisher. Fatwa also called for their execution, forcing Rushdie into hiding for more than a decade.
Sales of the book increased due to the religious outcry and controversy it caused. Salman Rushdie made about $2 million in the first year of the book’s release, according to Daniel Pipes’ 1990 book, The Rushdie Affair: The Novel, the Ayatollah, and the West. Meanwhile, a 2012 Daily Mail article by Geoffrey Levi said that Rushdie had purchased a multimillion-pound estate on Bishop Avenue in Hampstead.
Salman Rushdie is one of the most successful writers of the twentieth century, having written 12 novels, several essays and children’s books. Rushdie talked about his spending habits and hinted at how he amassed such a fortune in an interview with IOL’s Chris Taylor in 2020. The Golden PEN winner said he didn’t have much money at the start of his career. He declared:
“I broke most of the time.” In the UK, you can find a part-time job at an advertising agency and work two or three days a week. It took me 5 years to finish “Midnight’s Children” and I have supported myself by working at Ogilvy & Mather.”
The author of Shalimar Clown went on to say:
“I’ve always been very frugal with money.” For example, I did not buy a high-speed car, but a normal Citroen. Even if I had money, I would never buy a Lamborghini. I do not have and have never had a taste for luxury.”
Salman Rushdie’s net worth appears to be growing despite an unfortunate incident that just landed him in the hospital. According to Indy100, sales of The Satanic Verses have increased since the news of the sting broke. Several of Rushdie’s works have returned to bestseller lists on sites like Amazon in the past 48 hours.
