Host Ariana DeBose explains why the 2023 Tony Awards are taking place without a script

This year’s Tony Awards show is taking place without a script and Ariana DeBose explained why during her opening monologue.

The 32-year-old Oscar-winning actress addressed the writers’ strike during the impromptu monologue at the Tony Awards 2023 on Sunday night (June 11) at the United Palace Theater in Washington Heights in New York City.

“I don’t have a script, like all the presenters who take the stage tonight. We’re just making it up as we go along,” Ariana said.

Ariana also hosted last year’s show, adding: “To anyone who thought last year might have been a little off, I say, darlings, buckle up.”
