Henry Dargan McMaster (born May 27, 1947) is the 117th Governor of South Carolina and a member of the Republican Party. He has been in office since January 24, 2017. McMaster was elected Chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party on May 8, 1993. In 1996, 1998 and 2000, he was re-elected by the State Republican Convention. From 1993 to 2002, he was also a member of the Republican National Committee in that capacity. Under McMaster’s leadership, the Republican Party won the governorship, other statewide positions, the House of Representatives in 1994, and the powerful State Senate in 2000. South Carolina Republicans ran very close and victorious presidential elections under McMaster in 1996 and 2000. McMaster announced his retirement resigned from the position of party president on March 28, 2002, in order to run for attorney general in 2002.
