Early Life

Henry Cejudo – Retirement controversy

Immediately after his fight with Dominick Cruz, Henry Cejudo announced his retirement from professional fighting. However, various UFC commentators and fighters shared their opinions about how Henry was using the announcement as a contract negotiation ploy.

Similarly, fellow fighter Petr Yan shared his opinion on how he thinks Henry was retiring to avoid fighting him. Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan called on UFC President Dana White to vacate the bantamweight title. The two asked the UFC President to allow the pair to fight for the title.

Henry also admitted himself at the post-fight press conference that he would fight again. This was if UFC President Dana White offered him enough money. Henry stated:

“He knows the number, but let all these other bantamweights kill each other.”

A week after the retirement announcement, Henry’s manager stated in an interview that the wrestler was not retired. The manager shared that Henry would probably return to fighting in the summer of 2020. On 24 May 2020, the UFC officially vacated the bantamweight title. They removed Henry Cejudo’s name from their rankings.

Subsequently, on 8 June 2020, Henry announced that he would be willing to come out of retirement. He would do this to fight Alexander Volkanovski and claim the UFC featherweight championship. This title would be Henry’s 3rd title in a different weight class.

The wrestler made an appearance on the 27 May 2020 episode of AEW Dynamite. Henry appeared alongside fellow MMA fighters Rashad Evans and Vitor Belfort to support Mike Tyson. Mike was confronting members of Chris Jericho’s Inner Circle. Two months later, Henry confirmed he was in talks with AEW about potentially signing a contract. The wrestler further stated that he was also considering competing in amateur wrestling.
