Hatice Cengiz is a Turkish researcher. She was the fiancée of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed by the Saudi government.

Hatice Cengiz was born on Sunday, July 18, 1982 (age 38 years; as of 2020) in Bursa, a province in the Marmara region of northwestern Turkey. His zodiac sign is Cancer. She went to a religious seminary in Bursa. Later, she moved to Istanbul with her family. He studied in Egypt, Oman, Jordan and the United Kingdom. He completed his postgraduate studies in Anthropology in Oman. He studied Arabic for two years in Egypt. He received his PhD, researching Omani culture and practices, and writing his thesis on Daesh (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, also known as Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) from Istanbul University.

In an interview, talking about her first meeting with Jamal, Hatice said,

At the time, I was writing for a Turkish political magazine and during a coffee break I went up to him and introduced myself; I said I wanted to interview him for a political website. During the second break he came to me and agreed to talk. We talked for half an hour and I recorded the conversation. It’s still on my mobile phone. Later he told me that he liked my attitude and the fact that I spoke Arabic, not that he was interested in my looks.”

The two began talking to each other via email, where they discussed their views, opinions and insights on current affairs, political issues and the Arab world. Soon, they started dating each other and decided to get married. Initially, Hatice’s father disapproves of their relationship due to their large age difference of 22 years, but eventually consents to their relationship. On Sunday, September 16, 2018, Hatice and Jamal got married according to Islamic traditions in the presence of Hatice’s family.

On October 2, 2018, Jamal visited the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul to obtain a certificate showing that Jamal was divorced from his ex-wife. After Jamal got the certificate from the Consulate, they both decided to get married on civil basis. However, Jamal was murdered on October 2, 2018.

  • His Twitter account runs under the username ‘Merkan Recife’. Her Facebook account runs under the name ‘Khadijat Jenkiz’, at one time she was popular in the news with this name.
  • When Jamal Khashoggi went to the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey to collect documents proving that Jamal was divorced from his wife, Hatice accompanied him to the Consulate and waited for him outside as soon as he went inside the Consulate. Hatice reportedly waited for him for hours and when he did not come out, she contacted Turkish authorities and Jamal’s friend (an advisor to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan) and informed them of his disappearance.   • From the day of Jamal’s disappearance to the announcement of his death and all the judicial proceedings, Hatice has fought tirelessly to get justice for her late fiancé. He gave numerous interviews and wrote several columns seeking help from Turkish, US and UK authorities, and other organizations such as the United Nations to punish Jamal’s killers.
  • Demanding justice for Jamal, she contacted many people and also requested the US government for help in finding her fiancé. In his Washington Post op-ed, Cengiz wrote,

    At this time, I have urged President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to help shed light on Jamal’s disappearance. I urge Saudi Arabia, especially King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to show the same level of sensitivity and release the CCTV footage from the Consulate.

  • On March 2, 2021, US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar introduced a bill to impose sanctions on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) for his involvement in the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. While presenting the bill, he quoted Haiti and said,

    If the Crown Prince is not punished, it will signal once and for all that the main culprit can get away with murder.”
