Last year, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) announced the feature film Captain America 4, starring Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. The Hollywood Reporter announced on July 8, 2022 that the project had found its director, Nigerian-American director Julius Onah. However, Chris Evans has responded to the latest announcement story. Reacting to speculation that he will reprise his role as Steve Rogers, the 41-year-old actor has unequivocally confirmed that Anthony Mackie (as Sam Wilson) will play Captain America.
The director’s announcement most likely indicates that the project has entered the pre-production phase. It’s also possible that the fourth episode will arrive during Marvel’s Phase 5. More details about the project should be revealed during the Marvel Studios presentation in Hall H at the upcoming 2022 San Diego Comic-Con.
Chris Evans commented on Anthony Mackie’s Captain America.
As The Hollywood Reporter speculated that Chris Evans would reprise his role as Captain America in Chapter 4, the actor was quick to respond on Twitter. The Lightyear star wrote in a tweet:
“Sam Wilson is Captain America.”
At the time of writing, the tweet has received over 180,000 likes and 38,000 retweets. Many MCU fans praised Evans for echoing Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as the current Captain America. Captain Marvel and Ant-Man previously mentioned Sam Wilson as the next Captain America in a leaked MCU video from a Disney trip.
Netizens react to Chris Evans’ statement on reports of Steve Rogers returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Following Evans’ remarks about Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson taking on the role of Captain America in the MCU, many fans complimented the actor. While some people uploaded comic book images depicting the change, others emphasized that no one can replace Steve Rogers or Evans at the position.
I like Steve Rogers’ handover to Sam Wilson as the new Cap
I find it really funny that Anthony Mackie is older than Chris Evans in real life https://t.co/TsF3s5zYGv

Chris Evans’ earlier comments about the role
The Boston, Massachusetts native has already discussed the evolution of Sam Wilson taking on the iconic role of Steve Rogers in the comics and the MCU. Evans recently spoke with Yahoo Entertainment’s Kevin Polowy about his decade-long acting career as the iconic comic book character, as well as Anthony Mackie about Sam Wilson’s Captain America. He stated:
“There is no one else who can do it.” He really respects that. I’m really proud of him and excited to see what he does in the future.”
In another interview, Evans addressed the criticism surrounding his return to the MCU. Evans revealed the following when he appeared on the D23 Inside Disney Podcast:
“The role belongs to Anthony Mackie. So even if there was a new incarnation, not as Captain America, but as Steve Rogers, it would seem… I would be extremely careful, just because I love that part of my life professionally and personally. I love what those movies accomplished, and being able to revisit them and maybe add to their history would be disappointing if it didn’t work out. So, you would need an almost perfect recipe, which may or may not be in the plan.”
With Steve Rogers’ character aging in the MCU and the comically accurate transfer of Cap’s shield to Sam Wilson, Chris Evans’ return to the role seems unlikely. However, Marvel Studios may use past footage of the character in flashbacks or use photos of Rogers as Captain America. While Steve Rogers may not be returning to the MCU in person, Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier (aka Bucky Barnes) and Sam Wilson may reunite after Disney Plus’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
