Harsha Jingade was born on 21 May and hails from Shimoga (Shivamogga), Karnataka. His zodiac sign is Gemini. The 23-year-old activist held the post of ‘Prakanda Sahayakadarshi’ (coordinator) in Shivamogga district. Before his death, he was assisting a civil engineer.

Family

Harsh’s father Nagraj Jingde works as a tailor. His mother’s name is Smt. Padma. Harsh had no brother. He has two sisters. He has a sister named Ashwini Jingde.

Born in a Hindu family, Harsha was an ardent follower of the Hindu deity Rama. In an interview after his murder his sister said,

My brother was a Hindu…he died shouting Jai Shri Ram.”

Death

Amidst the 2022 Karnataka hijab controversy, Harsh was stabbed to death by unknown persons on 20 February 2022 in Bharathi Nagar, Shivamogga district of Karnataka. Although Harsh was admitted to McGann Hospital in Shimoga, he succumbed to his injuries. In January 2022, a controversy broke out after some Muslim students in Karnataka were refused entry to classes at a junior college demanding that they be allowed to wear hijab in classes. Karnataka Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister KS Eshwarappa alleged the involvement of Muslims in the murder of the Bajrang Dal worker. Eshwarappa was criticized for his right-wing political views against Muslims. Addressing the media, Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar talked about Eshwarappa and said,

He [Eshwarappa] The country and the national flag have been brought to shame… This (Harsh’s murder) has nothing to do with the hijab issue. This was the result of personal enmity between two groups… The police should thoroughly investigate the incident.

As of 25 February 2022, Karnataka Police had detained six people, including Mohammed Kashif, Saeed Nadeem, Afsifullah Khan, Rehan Sharif, Nihaan and Abdul Afnan, for the murder of Harsh in Shivamogga. Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) accused the Popular Front of India (PFI) and the Socialist Democratic Party of India (SDPI) of carrying out Harsh’s murder with the ulterior motive of spreading terror throughout the state of Karnataka.

    My brother was an active member of the organization [group], He thought only about Hindus and this is what killed him. Last night we were told that he has been admitted to the hospital. We want strict action to be taken against the culprits.

  • Addressing the media, Karnataka Home Minister Araga Gyanendra revealed that some cases had been registered against Harsh in connection with the clashes and objectionable comments on social media in the past.
