His cricket journey started from childhood when he wanted to become a footballer. He got involved in cricket when a sports teacher at his school advised him to go for trials for the Lahore Qalandars team. To which he agreed and he was selected. Apart from playing tape-ball cricket, he also worked as a salesman in a shop in Rawalpindi. Tape-ball cricket is a type of cricket practice where a tennis ball is wrapped with tape to change its speed in the air. Recalling that time, Harris Rauf told a local channel that,
,There was a trial of Lahore Qalandars and Tareef Bhai (a coach) was standing with a speed gun. (This was the case of Lahore Qalandars and Tarif Bhai was standing with the speed gun). One guy has 87 of mine, so I thought I have to put mine faster than this. (Someone bowled 87 mph, so I thought I had to bowl faster than that). So when the ball was bowled, speed gun 88 was shown. (So when I bowled, the speed gun showed 88 mph). Only then did I get a chance to go to the next round. (Only then did I get the pass to qualify for the next round).”
In 2019, he was bought by the Melbourne team to play in the Big Bash League (BBL), when he replaced the injured former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn. This was his first season where he took 20 wickets.
After that he had an extraordinary PSL (Pakistan Super League), BBL season.
As a result, he was called up to the national team in January 2020. His first international game was a T20 match against Bangladesh at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on 24 January. In that match, he conceded 32 runs and took one wicket of his batsman Afif Hussain; Bowled on nine runs. He was also involved in running out their star opener Tamim Iqbal. Pakistan won this match by five wickets.
A few months later, in June 2020, he was selected in the Pakistan team for the England tour. However, he was dropped from the team when his COVID report came positive along with two other players of the Pakistani team. On 30 October 2020, he made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. In this match, he did not take any wicket and gave 57 runs in ten overs with an economy of 5.7. However, Pakistan won the match by 26 runs and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Two days later, he took his first wicket of his captain Chamu Chibhabha; Caught behind. Pakistan won this match by six wickets.
He took three wickets in the next two matches of the series. His best bowling performance came against England on 13 July 2021 where he took four wickets for 65 runs in nine overs. Pakistan batted first and scored 331 runs. In reply, when the score was 104 runs, Haris Rauf dismissed their top order batsmen Phil Salt and Jack Crawley. He soon took the wicket of their century batsman James Vince. But, England won the match with 12 balls remaining.
In July 2021, he was named in Category-C of Centrally Contracted Players 2020–21 by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). In an official release issued by the PCB, Haris said,
“I’m very happy to get this news in the derby and, of course, will take it as motivation for this year.”
Soon, in September he was selected in the Pakistan squad for the T20 World Cup 2021. Pakistan’s opening match was against arch-rivals India on 24 October 2021. Batting first, India scored 151 runs on the board for the loss of seven wickets. Haris Rauf took one wicket of Hardik Pandya giving 25 runs at an economy of 6.25 in four overs. Pakistan won this historic match by ten wickets.
Their next match was against the Kiwis in Sharjah on 26 October. New Zealand were well underway when Harris Rauf dismissed their star opener Martin Guptill for 17 in the sixth over. He did not stop here. He took three more wickets of Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner for 22 runs at an economy of 5.5 runs per over. Pakistan again won this match by five wickets and confirmed its place in the semi-finals.
As of October 2021, he has played 8 ODI matches and taken 14 wickets with a career economy of 5.97. His highest number of wickets are in England. Interestingly, unlike other Asian bowlers with 13 wickets, his record in overseas matches is better than in home matches. He has played in this format of the game only under the leadership of Babar Azam. He also played 27 T20I matches till then and took 35 wickets at an economy of 8.58. He has taken the maximum number of wickets (9 wickets) against the Kiwi team.

controversies
‘throat cutting’ celebration
The controversy escalated when it was alleged that Harris Rauf celebrated by slitting his throat every time he took a wicket in a Big Bash League (BBL) match against Sydney Thunders while playing for Melbourne Stars. Many fans condemn this behavior of the Pakistani fast bowler. A Pakistani fan wrote,
“Harris Rauf is brilliant but he should change his style of celebration. There should be no place for cut-throat celebrations on the cricket field. Someone needs to guide this young boy.
Facts/General Knowledge
- In 2017 he revealed
“My father did not like cricket. He said that without recommendations you will not be able to make a career. Then I was selected for Lahore Qalandars, where talent has been the only criterion rather than recommendation.”
- Revealing the reason behind his performance in the T20 World Cup 2021, former Australian spinner Brad Hogg said,
“He knows he’s raw, a little wet behind the ears, he knows he hasn’t got much experience and knowledge at international level. So, he is listening to his teammates in the middle, like Babar Azam, Malik and Hafeez, experienced players, so that he can get the rest of the ball that he wants to bowl forward in those pressure situations. I thought it was brilliant and he did the same against New Zealand. You have to adapt and you can adapt.”
He further says,
“One thing he needs to take care of is that he is bowling the slower ball in a pattern. He is bowling slower balls in turn, so opposition teams will work on this and wait for the slower balls. Therefore, he needs to change his patterns.
- Former Pakistani batsman Salman Butt revealed the journey of Harris Rauf in world cricket and said,
,This is a rising star who has not come from GT Road (He is a rising star whose entry into the Pakistan team has not been straightforward).”
- Harris Rauf confessed to Shahid Afridi after taking his wicket in a match of 2020 PSL. On this his coach and former Pakistani fast bowler Aaqib Javed said,
“He is going through a learning curve. He is dressing well, respecting his superiors. It is important to develop not only as a cricketer but also as a human being. I feel good when I see his growth.”
