Camille Friend styled Halle’s hair for the film and talked about the process in an interview with Variety.
While she was determined to keep Halle’s hair, she knew a wig “just wasn’t going to work.”
“Halle locomotives are waist-high, more than 24 inches. And putting a wig on her was going to look crazy,” he explained.
Instead, he developed a process of wrapping red hair around his locs.
“If we take hair and wrap it around their locs, we don’t have to cut or dye them. We can change your color without changing the internal structure of your hair. Her structure and her hair are her,” she said.
The process was expensive: “I’m not doing a rough estimate, but we probably spent at least $150,000 because we had to redo it and take it out. You wouldn’t be able to use it and we’d have to start over. “It was a process.”
Once they mastered the process, they perfected it to work both underwater and once Ariel regained her legs and came out on land.
