Halle Bailey is reflecting on the battle with postpartum depression she’s been battling three months after the birth of her son, Halo.
In a Snapchat video, which was posted on the official’s Instagram account, the Little Mermaid The star opened up about her postpartum struggles.
“I just wanted to talk a little bit about my postpartum journey as a new mom,” she said. “And now I’m trying to work while I’m still severely postpartum. Honestly, I have a very, very very serious postpartum.”
Noting that she doesn’t know if any new moms can relate, Halle Bailey said, “It’s to the point where it really is. “It’s hard for me to be away from my baby for more than 30 minutes at a time before I start freaking out.”
Although her boyfriend DDG, with whom she shares Halo, has been supportive, Bailey revealed that there are still some difficulties with the transition back to work.
“[DDG is] the most amazing dad in the world,” Halle Bailey continued. “I feel like he’s in a completely new body. I mean, I don’t know who I am.”
The actress also spoke about the “stigma” of postpartum depression. “Before having a child and hearing people talk about postpartum, it just went in one ear and out the other. “I didn’t realize how serious it really was.”
Bailey then described postpartum depression as like swimming in an ocean that has the biggest waves you’ve ever seen.
“You’re trying not to drown and you’re trying to come up for air. And you have those moments where you come up for air and they feel like the most beautiful things and it’s great. Then you have those moments where you choke again.”
Halle clarified that this feeling has nothing to do with her son.
Speaking about her own triggers, Halle Bailey stated that online comments are a big problem for her.
“It’s not good to be on social media during the postpartum period,” she explained. “But I got very emotional today, especially seeing some of the things that have been said about me and my family. And the ones I love and the ones I love.”
The singer also said that she finds it “very, very” crazy that people can feel the need to say such hurtful things about those they don’t even know.
“Normally I will see it and it will hurt my feelings,” he said of the comments. “But I won’t say anything. I’m usually good at not saying anything. I just suck it up, swallow my pride, and wish that person nothing but the best. “To whoever said something horrible about me and my family, I wish you nothing but the best.”
However, on days when depression gets her down, Halle admitted that she has a hard time getting over her emotions. “Something grows in me to raise awareness about,” she said of postpartum.
“Even though you admire certain people and think they’re celebrities and seem to have it all together, you never know what someone is going through. Especially someone who literally just had a baby.”
