Gyanendra Purohit is an Indian lawyer and activist who is the co-founder of Anand Service Society, an organization working for deaf and disabled people in India.

Gyanendra Purohit was born on 25 July in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. His zodiac sign is Leo. He did his Masters in Social Work, LLB and LLM from Indore School of Social Work, affiliated to Devi Ahilya University, Indore (1997–1999). Before studying law, he was also doing Chartered Accountancy.

Gyanendra wanted to become a chartered accountant, but after his brother, Anand (deaf and mute), died in a train accident, he gave up his dream to dedicate his life to the disabled. He advocated for the disabled (especially the deaf and unable to speak). In 1997, he started Anand Service Society, an organization for the deaf and disabled, with his wife Monica Purohit.
The organization helps deaf and non-speaking children with their education, training and employment support, and has residential centers in Indore and tribal and rural areas like Dhar and Alirajpur (India’s most illiterate district) in Madhya Pradesh. Through his organization, he worked for providing admission to deaf children in general schools, providing reservation in teacher posts to deaf and speech impaired people by the state government, providing reservation quota for deaf people in government ITI colleges and their admission in them. , advocated conducting the BERA test. - When he needed land for his NGO for the deaf, the government refused to give him any assistance. Later, Gyanendra’s father, the late Babulal Purohit, gave away his retirement money to help buy a piece of land for the noble cause.
- Gyanendra and Monica Purohit composed the national anthem in sign language in 2003, which was recognized by the then Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
- In 2005, Gyanendra and his wife translated the blockbuster Bollywood films Sholay (1975), Gandhi (1982), Munna Bhai MBBS (2003), and Taare Zameen Par (2007) into sign language.
- Gyanendra and his wife have also started India’s first deaf-and-dumb-friendly police station at Tukoganj Police Station in Indore with Madhya Pradesh Police. This is a place where deaf and speech impaired people can register their complaints in sign language.
- In 2015, Gyanendra and his wife appeared in the BBC production ‘Aaj Ki Raat Hai Zindagi’, a talk show hosted by Amitabh Bachchan and aired on Star Plus.
- In 2017, he appeared with his wife on the talk show ‘DSC Show’, which aired on Zee Entertainment and hosted by Dr. Subhash Chandra. In the show, Gyanendra talked about the work of Anand Service Society and his dedication towards helping the disabled.
- During the nationwide lockdown in the Corona pandemic, Anand Service Society saved more than 500 deaf and disabled persons through sign language video call helpline (launched at the national level). The most famous case was when he saved a deaf girl from suicide by online video call counseling for 14 hours.
- In February 2020, Anand Service Society’s initiative became a part of ‘Indian Social Responsibility Network (ISRN) Stories – Volume 4 – Enunciated by Pt. ‘Deendayal Upadhyay’ by Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
- Gyanendra and his wife also gave sign language training to the employees of Narmada Jhabua Gramin Bank. This bank became the first deaf-friendly bank in India.
- Gyanendra and his wife also helped Sudeep Shukla, a deaf and mute man, to contest the state assembly elections from Satna in Madhya Pradesh in 2018. The couple helped Shukla deliver the speech. He is the first MLA candidate who is deaf and mute.
- In 2020, he appeared in Karamveer Special of the game show Kaun Banega Crorepati hosted by Amitabh Bachchan.
