Gukesh D is an Indian chess player, best known for winning the individual gold medal at the Chess Olympiad in August 2022. Due to his strong performance, the Indian team won the bronze medal in the Olympiad. A chess prodigy, he became the third youngest person in history to qualify for the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in March 2019.

Dommaraju Gukesh was born on Monday, 29 May 2006 (age 16 years; as in 2022) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He studied at Velammal Vidyalaya, Mel Ayanambakkam, Chennai. Gukesh started playing chess at the age of seven.

As of August 2022, his FIDE rating is 2699. In 2015, he won the Asian Schools Chess Championship in the Under-9 category. In 2017, he participated in the 31st National Under-11 Open Chess Championship in Pune and won the title in the Under-11 category.

In 2018, he competed and won in the under-12 category at the World Cadet Chess Championship held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

In March 2018, he won the International Master title at the Capel-la-Grande Open. He won five gold medals in the Under-12 Individual Rapid and Blitz, Under-12 Team Rapid and Blitz and Under-12 Individual Classical formats at the Asian Youth Chess Championship 2018.

In 2019, he became the second youngest Grandmaster in history at the age of 12 years, 7 months and 17 days. However, when American chess player Abhimanyu Mishra became the youngest player to qualify for the Grandmaster title on 30 June 2021, Gukesh D became the third youngest Grandmaster in history. In June 2021, he won the Gelfand Challenge at the Julius Baer Challengers Chess Tour. In 2022, he won the individual gold medal in the Chess Olympiad. He led the Indian team to the bronze medal after a strong performance with eight consecutive wins in the first eight rounds, but they lost to the Uzbek team led by Nodirbek Abdusattorov in the 10th round.

    He became crazy about chess from a young age. The passion grew stronger with each passing year, but not at the expense of other interests. He also watches and plays cricket, reads books (mostly biographies of players), plays badminton and table tennis, and enjoys socializing with friends and family during his breaks from the board.’

  • In an interview, he said that his father was his biggest supporter as he left his job as a doctor to accompany Gukesh to tournaments. Talking about this in an interview, his father said,

    It was quite difficult to manage my profession and his career. I stepped back to support my son. My wife goes to work. It is very difficult but when you get these results we are happy for all the sacrifices made for it.”
