Gopi Bhalla started his career as a theater artiste and usually played the role of Ravana in local Ramleela. In the early 1990s, he moved to Mumbai from Punjab in search of work in the film and TV industry. Initially, he lived with his old friend Darshan Singh from Nabha, who was working as a bank employee in Mumbai.

- According to Gopi, he is afraid of dogs. One day his colleagues along with the dog trainer on the sets of FIR played a prank on Gopi to scare him and laughed a lot at the whole incident. Talking about the prank in an interview, he said,
Usually I’m the trickster on the set. But, this time poetry overpowered me. I am afraid of dogs and when the dog started sniffing around me I got really scared. I couldn’t run away because I knew the dog would chase me. I avoided going near the dog until the entire shoot sequence involving the dogs was completed.
- Gopi gained immense popularity with the role of Gopinath Gandotra and became one of the few characters from the show FIR that remained unchanged till the completion of the show in 2015. In an interview, while talking about his role as Gopinath, he said,
I am now the oldest character in the show and I am proud of it. It has been a long time since I stepped into Gopinath’s shoes. Still, I’m not tired of it. There are many colors, and a specific style that I feel has become popular. I love when people copy the way my character speaks, liberally uses ‘that’s’ or the way he walks. It is gratifying.”
- According to Gopi, he improved his comedy timing under the guidance of late Kader Khan. In an interview, while talking about his experience as a Punjabi actor, he said,
I have done about 14 to 15 films in Punjabi language. Most of the times I shared the screen with late Kader Khan. I have to say what a great actor he was along with great writing. Also, I would like to say that comic timing is something that I have learned from him. I loved working with him and sharing things.”
