Gary Richard Herbert (born May 7, 1947) is the 17th and current Governor of Utah, taking office in 2009. He was a Republican who chaired the National Governors Association during the 2015–2016 election cycle.

Biography of Herbert Richard Peters
Herbert Richard Peters was born on May 7, 1947 in American Fork, Utah to parents Carol and Paul Richard Peters. When he was a child, his parents separated, and his mother quickly remarried to Duane Barlow Herbert, who officially adopted him. Herbert’s original father also remarried, but he and his paternal half-siblings were raised in separate families and had little contact with each other. Governor Herbert grew up in Orem, Utah. He attended Orem High School and served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern States Mission. He later attended Brigham Young University, but did not complete his studies.

Gary Herbert was a member of the Utah Army National Guard for six years, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. After serving in the National Guard, he founded Herbert and Associates Realtors. Herbert served as president of the Utah Association of Counties and the Utah Association of Realtors. Mrs. Herbert ran The Kids Connection, a childcare agency. Herbert began campaigning for the Republican nomination for governor of Utah in November 2003.
Herbert joined forces with then-rival Jon Huntsman Jr. in April 2004, a month before the state’s gubernatorial convention, becoming the latter’s running mate. At the convention, the Huntsman-Herbert candidacy upset incumbent Gov. Olena S. Walker before winning the November election. Herbert was later appointed deputy governor.
