Frances Robathan News

George Alagiah, who was diagnosed with colon cancer nine years ago, spoke movingly about his fear of losing his wife of almost 40 years.

The BBC reporter, who passed away today at age 67 after being diagnosed with the disease in 2014, previously talked about the one thing he had planned to do with his wife Frances Robathan right up until the end and how the notion of not being able to do it ‘haunted’ him.

One of the station’s longest-tenured newsreaders, the Sri Lankan-born journalist disclosed to the Sunday Telegraph last year that his one ambition in life was to hold his wife’s hand till he passed away.

George asked: “Will I be able to hold hands with my wife till the very end? That’s one of the things I want to accomplish. It bothers me.

After meeting as Durham University students, George and Frances, who was the Senior Partnerships Adviser for the Fairtrade Foundation, got married in 1984. George admitted that he thought his disease would “probably get me in the end” in a January 2022 interview, but he argued he still felt “very lucky” because of his great profession and happy family life.

George described the day he received his diagnosis in 2014 while talking on the podcast Desperately Seeking Wisdom. It took him some time to realize what he “needed to do” to maintain his optimism. “I had to pause and say, “Wait a second. Would my life have been a failure if the complete stop had come now? he questioned.

The family I had, the possibilities my family had, the incredible luck to run into (Frances), who has now been my wife and lover for all these years, and the kids that we raised—it truly didn’t feel like a failure when I look back and consider my journey.

The news of Alagiah’s passing was revealed to the PA news agency on Monday in a statement from his agent, Mary Greenham. I’m so sorry to have to let you know that George Alagiah passed away peacefully today, surrounded by family and friends.

“George battled valiantly, but regrettably that battle was lost earlier today. Everyone who knew George, whether they were friends, coworkers, or members of the public, loved him dearly. Simply said, he was a wonderful person. My heart goes out to Fran, the boys, and his extended family.

George had chemotherapy and multiple procedures, including the removal of the majority of his liver, after receiving a stage four diagnosis. He declared the end of his therapy a year later, and in November he returned to BBC News At Six. But in 2017, the cancer returned.

In order to deal with a new spread, he took another leave from the studio in October 2021. He then returned in April 2022. Blood in his stool led the father of two to realize something was amiss, and ever since disclosing his diagnosis, he has urged people to take advantage of the free routine NHS testing.

Tim Davie, the director-general of the BBC, commented when the agency for Alagiiah made a statement, saying: “Across the BBC, we are all tremendously sad to hear the news about George. We are currently considering his family.

“George was one of the best and bravest journalists of his generation, covering news expertly and bravely from all around the globe. Audiences could tell that he was more than just a superb journalist; they could sense his goodness, empathy, and amazing humanity. Everyone liked him, and we will miss him terribly.
