Arjun Singh is an Indian canoeist. He won a bronze medal in the men’s Sprint C-2 1000 meters canoeing event at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

Family

Arjun’s family is originally from Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. Later he shifted to Roorkee, Uttarakhand.

Arjun Singh’s father has passed away. Arjun’s mother has a job in a pharmaceutical manufacturing factory in Roorkee where she earns around Rs 8000 to Rs 10000 per month.

Arjun Singh and his mother led a challenging life. They lived in a rented house and had to take care of their needs with their mother’s small income. Arjun Singh was fond of water sports since a young age. His uncle, Ajit Singh, who was a national and international canoeist, encouraged Arjun’s passion for water sports. Ajit Singh convinces Arjun’s family to relocate to Roorkee, Uttarakhand. In 2017, Arjun, who was 12 years old at the time, started training at the Army node in Roorkee. In 2022, Arjun spent some time training at the SAI (Sports Authority of India) Water Sports Complex in Jagatpur, Odisha. In 2023, Arjun Singh shifted to Bhopal where he joined the SAI center in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Arjun went to Bhopal on the advice of his coach Piyush Borai.

Despite his current training at SAI Bhopal, Arjun says he has not forgotten the challenging times when his family had to struggle to earn two meals a day. According to Arjun, life has improved since joining Bhopal SAI Centre, where he receives excellent care.

Arjun Singh competed at the 2023 Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint Asian Championships held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where he won 5 medals (three silver medals, one gold and one bronze medal). A few months before he competes at the Canoe Sprint World Championships in Germany in August 2023, Arjun Singh met his 2023 Asian Games teammate Sunil Singh Salam. Their combined efforts took them through to the finals, where they came in ninth place.

At the 2023 Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China, Arjun Singh and his partner Sunil Singh Salam won the bronze medal. Both of them achieved a time of 3:53.329 seconds. Arjun Singh and Sunil Singh Salaam are the second Indian team to bring home a canoeing medal (for 1000m doubles category) from the Asian Games. The last time an Indian team (consisting of Siji Sadanandan and Johnny Rommel) won an Asian Games medal in the canoeing event was during the Hiroshima Asian Games in 1994. Arjun Singh aims to be selected for the Paris Olympics in 2024. According to their coach Piyush Baroi, if the team comes second in the Olympic qualifiers then they will get a chance in the Paris Olympics.
