Leveling up in Final Fantasy XIV can be tough at times, but there’s actually an in-game mechanic that rewards you for taking a break from time to time. This is called a break experience and it acts as an exp boost to help you work at a higher level when you return to the game.

What is Rested Exp?
Rested Experience is an experience boost for characters who have been offline (or AFK only) for a while. It can be used to balance all classes, whether combat (War Disciple or Magic) or non-combat (Hand Disciple or Earth Disciple).
Like most other exp, Rested Exp is only available during battle, gathering, or crafting events. It does not apply to daily products such as quest rewards or roulette or bonus spins.
You can see your current Rested Experience Points in the experience bar on the HUD. It seems like a vague extension of your current experience.
If the bar is blue, you have enough Rested Exp in the shop to take you to the next level. You can archive up to 1.5 levels of Rest XP and it takes 4 days to fully archive.
How do you get Rested Exp?
All you need to do to build Rested Exp is log out or hang up in the bunker. Shelter is represented by a small crescent icon at the bottom of the experience bar. If you are in a city or settlement, chances are you are in a shelter.
The game doesn’t really let you exit immediately if you’re not in the shelter. Instead, a countdown window will pop up. If this happens, you know you are not in a shelter and should cancel and go to a shelter first.
You don’t need to log out of your room. This is a common misconception among new players. When you log back into the game, all the motel room does is give you a cute “wake up” animation.
Generally, if you’re near Aetheryte, an NPC vendor, or an area with no enemies, you’re in Sanctuary. But if you’re not sure, just look for the crescent moon in your experience bar.
Interestingly, if you are in the Sanctuary while doing a quest like a dungeon, you will continue to accumulate Rested Exp over time. This means that even if you start a dungeon without storing anything, you will occasionally get extra experience points from enemies in the dungeon because you have earned some Rest Experience Points .
How do you use Rested Exp?
You can think of a rest experience as a pool of stored experience that is distributed to you as experience increases as long as you have a little left. Whenever you gain experience through combat, gathering, or crafting, you get 50% more experience from your Rested Exp store. This will be included in your system message as you gain experience.
For example, you might get the message “You have gained 8,313 XP (+50%) EXP”, which means that part of this 8,313 XP is due to your rested Exp being consumed. So you cannot “choose” which work to spend, it is automatically consumed until it runs out. You have to pay attention and choose to do the job you want to gain experience.
Don’t worry if you’re using the job to its fullest. You won’t waste Rested Exp playing these jobs, and your experience store won’t be consumed.
Combat jobs often have a lot of positive experience gain, whether from armory rewards, food effects, or special gear. Add 50% Rested Exp to these for a unique total, so you might see higher values like (+200%).
In general, it is more difficult to use Rested Exp for artisans, as it only affects experience for crafting recipes and not quests or turns. You have to prepare a lot of materials for crafting before you can use up all the stored experience. Collectors can always grind nodes or perform Leves to use boost items, as their Levequest provides experience for the event, rather than passing them in.
Tips for using Rested Exp
Rested Exp is a single resource shared by all your quests. If you have some savings, any of your jobs below max level will cost that money as they gain experience through combat, crafting, or gathering. Keep this in mind if you’re trying to upgrade for a specific job.
You can get the most “bonus” by using Rested Exp in higher level jobs. Lower level jobs require less experience to get to the next level, so level 1.5 XP is less important in level 10 jobs than level 60 jobs.
That said, it’s a small difference that only matters if you’re really trying to minify your levels to make them as fast as possible on multiple jobs. I tend to only level up one job at a time, so if that job is still low, it will gain experience anyway.
The fastest way to deplete is to continuously gain a lot of experience. Killing multiple enemies at your level (such as in leveling up dungeons), crafting recipes for your level, or gathering ingredients at your level are all effective ways to take advantage 50% increase.
summary
Always make sure to log out or hang up (check the crescent moon in your experience bar) while in the shelter to make sure you get Rested Exp when not playing.
Use your accumulated Exp by playing advanced dungeons, crafting advanced recipes or collecting from advanced buttons.
When you store XP, focus on the jobs you want to level up the most first so you don’t accidentally spend them on lesser jobs.
I hope this helps you get the most out of your rest experience and encourages you to take frequent breaks from playing the game. Do you have any questions about this or any other experience improvements? Let me know in the comments section.
