Country singer Wynonna Judd left her fans worried after a “subdued” performance during the CMA Awards on Wednesday night.
Judd, 59, appeared unwell as he sang with country newcomer Jelly Roll a duet of his song, “Need A Favor.”
As he sang, Judd clung to Jelly Roll’s shoulder, seeming to grip him tightly for support. The “Love Is Alive” singer’s CMA appearance is one of the few troubling performances she’s had since she lost her mother, Naomi Judd, to suicide last April. In June, he criticized singer Shania Twain for hugging her on stage and coldly told her, “Don’t touch my hair.”
Fans react to Wynonna Judd’s strange performance
After Wynonna Judd and Jelly Roll’s performance aired, viewers of the CMA awards show rushed to Twitter to express their thoughts on Judd’s behavior.
One Twitter user said, “Looks like Wynonna Judd is struggling up there,” with a crying emoji.
“Okay, no one’s talking about the elephant in the room,” another user said. “What’s wrong with Wynonna Judd? Drunk or sick?
A fourth user asked: “Why is Wynonna Judd holding on to Jelly Roll for dear life?”
“Why is Wynonna Judd grabbing Jelly like that…and why is she screaming the words?” another user asked. “It seems like she doesn’t even know the words! I can’t even…”
Wynonna Judd is “clean” with fans
After noticing that fans were concerned about her health following the CMA performance, Judd took to Instagram to address her “strange” behavior.
She captioned the post: “Don’t read the comments, they say…”
In the video, the singer smiled and said, “I’m going to be honest with all of you. She was terribly nervous. I went outside and looked at Jelly Roll. “I wanted it to be as good for him.”
“I could cry right now, but I’m not going to because I’m a big fan of his and he asked me to sing and I said, ‘Of course!’ I went out and I was so nervous that I held on for dear life. And that’s the bottom line,” Judd concluded.
