Selena was born in Grand Prairie, Texas, the daughter of Ricardo Gomez and Amanda Cornett. Selena’s Mexican father and Italian mother were high school sweethearts and had Selena when Mandy was 16 years old. Rick and Mandy were married, but separated when Selena was 5 years old. Selena was raised primarily by her mother after her divorce and blamed Mandy for the separation.
Selena stated in a MY! Entertainment special, “I blamed my mom a lot [for the divorce] because he wanted a family so much. I wanted to have my mom and dad together. I remember being mad at my mom. I still feel really bad about it.”
Amanda did everything she could to support Selena and at times worked three jobs. Her accusations hurt her, but she knew that one day her daughter would understand her situation. She stated:
“[Selena] he would vent and yell at me and what I could do was just say, ‘I’m sorry, but someday you’ll understand.’
Cornett’s prediction came true as Selena now appreciates how her mother raised her. selena said Glamor in 2012 that she tries to emulate her mother in everything she does. He the same old love singer stated:
“Is by [my mom] that I can do things on my own. I like to be professional. I like to be on time. I like being nice to people, and I know I’m reflecting that at the end of the day.”
Rick used Selena to pick up waitresses at Hooters
Amanda raised Selena, but Rick wasn’t completely absent from his daughter’s life. He has several old photos of the couple, which suggests that he spent time with Selena when she was young. Selena also revealed that Rick used her to pick up waitresses at Hooters when he went there to watch basketball.
selena said harper’s bazaar that it became a ‘thing’ between her and Rick. She said:
“When I was seven years old, my dad would go to Hooters to see [San Antonio] Spurs games, but he began to notice that when I would walk in, with my pigtails on, all the waitresses would say, ‘Hey!’ So he ended up spending time with me but with all these pretty girls coming over. And that became our thing.”
Mandy married Brian Teefey in 2006 and Rick married Sarah Gomez in 2012.
Mandy married Brian Teefey in 2006, and in late 2011, Selena announced that Mandy was expecting a child. Unfortunately, in December 2011, Mandy had a miscarriage and lost Scarlett. In December 2017, Mandy opened up about the miscarriage in a lengthy Instagram post. She wrote:
Thank you to all the fans who honored our Scarlett yesterday. December 17th will never be the same again, but we decided to celebrate by writing your handwriting on red balloons and letting them go. Now 17 is interleaved with the envelope of S2. So, she was there in spirit like always. A mother’s love for her children is quite fierce.”
Fortunately for Mandy, she got pregnant again and gave birth to Gracie Elliot Teefey on June 12, 2013. Selena and Gracie are very close and she has several photos of her little sister on Instagram. Rick married Sara Gomez in 2012 and they welcomed their daughter Victoria ‘Tori’ Gomez on June 24, 2014. Selena is also close with her father and her stepmother Sarah hers.

Selena and her mom are very close, but they have had fights a few times. In 2014, it was alleged that Selena fired her mother as her manager without notice. Mandy then stated that she never expected to manage Selena forever and that it was better that she no longer manage her.
Later, as the #MeToo movement began to gain traction, celebrities began to distance themselves from the likes of Woody Allen. However, Selena kept quiet about her relationship with Woody Allen. Mandy said that she had tried to get Selena to stop working with Allen, but she refused to listen. She responded to a fan on Instagram saying:
“I’m sorry, no one can force Selena to do something she doesn’t want to do. I had a long conversation with her about not working with him and it didn’t work out. His team are amazing people. There is no one here to blame. No one controls him. She takes all of her decisions. No matter how much you try to advise her, she falls on deaf ears.”
Mandy also took issue with the late 2017 reconciliation between Selena and Justin Beiber. TMZ reported that she was so angry about the relationship that she had to go to the hospital. As a result, Selena and Justin took a break so Mandy had time to come to terms with the relationship. A source talking to US Weekly fixed:
“Her mother was her support when she had health complications. Justin and Selena decided to take a break to give her family more time to heal and come to terms with the idea of her and Justin being a couple again.”
Mandy, who has ADHD, is very attentive to her daughter’s mental health
Mandy Teefey’s mental health problems began when she became pregnant with Selena at age 16. “I didn’t understand it because I didn’t grow up in a neighborhood where you talk about feelings,” she said. Ella mandy said that she did not know that therapy existed.
Mandy’s insecurities grew, forcing her to seek out therapists. However, most of the therapists she met diagnosed her without proper evaluations. A Dallas psychologist diagnosed Mandy with bipolar disorder and prescribed an anti-seizure medication. Early menopause exposed her misdiagnosis. Mandy said People:
“I couldn’t sleep, and one night I took more than I should of my sleeping medication. I was wide awake and I woke up my husband, like, ‘Something’s wrong. I have to go somewhere.'”
Mandy did not read the first table to 13 reasons why undergo an appropriate mental evaluation. The treatment center concluded that Mandy had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and ruled out bipolar.
“I started reading about ADHD at 40, trying to figure out what was best for me and how I needed to restructure my mind,” he said. Mandy takes medication to control the disorder.
Mandy pays close attention to Gracie’s mental health to ensure that any conditions she may have inherited are diagnosed early and properly. Mandy continued:
“She’s not in therapy or anything, but we give her extra tutoring and make sure she gets everything she needs because there’s a good chance she’ll get it when she’s older.”
“ADHD and bipolar disorder are often misdiagnosed in girls, so knowing my genes can help guide her on the right path. But I like his spirit and I enjoy it.”
Selena and her mother Mandy have launched a mental health platform called Wondermind
Mandy Teefey, Selena Gomez and Daniella Pierson
Selena Gomez, her mother Mandy, and her friend Daniella Pierson are the pioneers behind the Wondermind mental health platform.
The three of them realized they were soul mates when Daniella interviewed them for her newsletter, The Newsette. Mandy talked about her anxiety and her ADHD; Selena talked about doubts and self-esteem issues; Daniella detailed her struggle with OCD. Gomez spoke to Entrepreneur about that conversation:
“It is one of the moments where I felt closest to my mother: we got together to talk about something that each one has experienced in their own way. It was wonderful. And then being understood by Daniella was even better.”
Wondermind’s goal is to “create a world where mental health care is democratized and destigmatized,” the platform’s website reads. The site claims that one needs more than the occasional therapy session to properly treat mental health issues.
The goal of the platform is to fill the void that therapy cannot fill. “(You wouldn’t expect fitness results from seeing a trainer only once in a while, would you?),” the site reads. “That’s what Wondermind is for: to give you easy, practical ways to put your mental health first every day.”
Selena would rather not undertake this project with anyone but her mother. “Something I’ve always tried to do in my career is make sure I lend my voice to places where it matters,” she said. Entrepreneur. “And I have to give my mom credit for that because she taught me everything.”
