News about Eric Holder

At a symposium in Washington on Wednesday, former Attorney General Eric Holder argued that Donald Trump was pursuing “dangerous” criminal justice reform plans that ignored a growing bipartisan consensus.

Eric Holder considers the administration’s approach to crime risky and demoralizing.

At the National Crime Law Enforcement Summit, Holder, the nation’s first black attorney general, pressed Trump and his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, about recent administration actions that mark a return to the tough crime-fighting strategies of the 1990s. Holder joined police chiefs, elected officials and other advocates in this effort.

He continued, saying it was “disappointing, disheartening and extremely dangerous” that the Trump administration decided to withdraw measures such as mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent drug offenses.

Holder argued that “this administration’s lack of judgment will send this country back to its discredited past.”

The Justice Department, under Sessions’ leadership, has taken various actions to reverse the Obama administration’s policies to combat racial injustice in the criminal justice system.

In May, the attorney general ordered federal prosecutors to “charge and prosecute the most egregious, most provable offenses”, supporting tougher mandatory minimum sentences.

In addition, Sessions rescinded Barack Obama’s directive directing the Justice Department to allocate fewer staff to private prisons. Private prisons have been phased out by the Obama administration, arguing that they are more expensive and less secure.

Obama-era restrictions on the supply of military equipment to police departments, used during the 2014 protests in Ferguson, Missouri following the murder of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer, have also been lifted under the Trump administration.

As part of the controversial reintroduction of civil forfeiture that is banned in certain jurisdictions, law enforcement officials have also been expanded their ability to seize assets from suspects even if they are not found guilty.

Holder described the actions as “ideologically motivated” and used the situation as a focal point in the debate over racial profiling and criminal justice reform.
