Most comedians have experienced “stage death” or the inability to laugh at least once in their career. However, Emmanuel Sonubi, a finalist for Best Newcomer at last year’s Dave’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards and about to embark on his first tour, nearly fainted while holding the microphone.

Four years ago, the 6ft 3in former club guard suffered heart failure in the middle of a performance. He believes he is simply having an asthma attack. He remembers thinking, “Calm down, keep breathing and you’ll be fine.” Little did I know that my heart wasn’t even pumping oxygenated blood.

“I finished the set.” I had to make a point. I can’t breathe regularly, which is funny because it makes my time so much better. He was in the hospital for more than three weeks.

Surprisingly, Emmanuel has never had a bad gig thanks to a combination of great, accessible material, hilarious storytelling, likable demeanor, and years of experience that could be considered peachy. Create expertise in a variety of environments.

It all starts at home. He has five older sisters and was surrounded by laughter growing up in North London. Emmanuel is a big fan of comedy and musicals and wants to pursue a career in theater first.
