During her appearance, where she was joined by Susan Dickinson, director of the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD) for World FTD Awareness Week, Emma told the show that she doesn’t know if Bruce is aware of his condition at all.

“It’s hard to know,” he said. “It’s hard to tell.”

Emma continued: “What I’m learning is that dementia is difficult. It is difficult for the diagnosed person. It’s also hard on the family. And that’s no different for Bruce, or me, or our girls. “When they say it’s a family disease, it really is.”

He also talked about how he’s coming to terms with it, saying that the diagnosis was both a “blessing and a curse,” as was “finally understanding what’s happening…[but] “It doesn’t make it any less painful.”

“Just accepting it and knowing what’s happening to Bruce makes it a little easier,” Emma adds.

Emma also spoke about her dislike of the word “caregiver” and instead being a “care partner.”

“He’s my partner, so I’m his care partner.”

Last month, Emma opened up about her own struggles in that role in an emotional video.
