Elon Musk is footing the bill.
The 51-year-old CEO of SpaceX and Twitter, who is facing significant criticism and backlash for his plan to charge people for verification on Twitter after removing legacy checkmarks on Thursday (April 20), revealed that he is personally paying some bills.
Stephen King, who previously said he would never subscribe to a paid version of Twitter, still has a blue checkmark. He later tweeted that the information currently on his profile is incorrect.

“My Twitter account says I signed up for Twitter Blue. I have not. My Twitter account says that I have given a phone number. I have not,” she wrote.
“You’re welcome, namaste 🙏,” Elon replied, apparently indicating that he paid for it himself.
Ice T has also previously indicated that he would not pay for one, quoting Stephen King on Twitter, writing “Thank you Stephen. Don’t believe the hype. 💥”, suggesting that his was also being paid for.
LeBron James and William Shatner, who argued with Elon earlier after saying they had no plans to sign up for Twitter Blue, check the checkmark, raising suspicions that Elon is funding checkmarks for the accounts he argued with. just to troll them.
“I’m paying for something personally,” he later tweeted.
the edge also confirmed that a Twitter employee emailed LeBron James to “extend a free subscription to Twitter Blue for his account, @kingjames, on behalf of Elon Musk.”
Only seven of the 50 most followed accounts on Twitter are currently verified, via Rolling Stone.
